And that's fine (as you should be) but I doubt it's some random nobody, it's usually a tech expert. The reason I bought an OLED is to watch 4K Blu Ray and as there won't be any 8K physical media, I have no need to upgrade. Yeah, it upscales but to diminishing returns. It's extremely likely you won't be able to see the difference unless you have like an 85 inch screen and even then, the viewing distance is supposed to be around 4.5 feet. I sit 8 feet away and so I have no need for 8K in the home.

If you have a giant screen with a projector, go for it!

Never.

I'm just high on life and more appreciative of what I have than I have been in a very long time.

I'm feeling that way too. I'm glad that you're happy. Despite our little (wee little) argument the other day, I'm certainly glad for my physical media atm.

I have a projector for my HT and a LG OLED (55 inch) for my living room. I sit six foot away.
I read that there wasn’t much difference between DVD and Blu-ray so I was blown away when I played my first disc (Apocalypto), I was told there wasn’t much difference between a Blu-ray and 4K and once again, I was blown away. I dint listen to experts, I trust my own eyes. It’s that simple.

Any so-called expert who claim there isn’t much difference between DVD and bluray needs to have their eyes and/or brain examined.

I read comments like that all the time but wow, was I impressed with that disc. It blew me away. I bought a projector the following week because I was then confident that I could replicate the cinema experience. It was a very exciting week.

Eddie Cunningham Q&A: In Defense of the Disc

Quote:
Earlier this year, Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. announced plans to merge their physical distribution businesses under Universal Pictures Home Entertainment president Eddie Cunningham through a joint venture that will market and distribute Blu-ray Discs, DVDs and 4K Ultra HD discs in the United States and Canada. The proposed union, which still must be approved by the U.S. Justice Department, is expected to officially launch early in 2021. It covers new releases and library titles as well as television content, and will be operational for up to 10 years.

On the appointment of Cunningham to lead the new joint venture, Peter Levinsohn, now vice chairman and chief distribution officer for the Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, said, “For more than two decades Eddie has been an expert in understanding the evolution of the physical home entertainment landscape. He’s been a dynamic leader in shepherding business innovation and operational effectiveness.”

There is a huge difference between DVD and Blu Ray. There is a smaller but noticeable difference between Blu ray and 4K (in terms of resolution.) HDR is the main reason to upgrade. I've had the Blu Ray disc in, in the past by mistake and no one realised until half way through the film. This is on a 55 inch TV, it would be more noticeable on an 85 inch TV. But now, we're reaching the end of what the human eye can see and any upgrade would be minimal at best.

Feel free to buy an 8K TV and check for yourself. I won't, because I know it's diminishing returns. 4K Blu Ray is worth it, mainly for the HDR and WCG. I see no benefit of 8K, given the screen size and the distance I sit at. Swapping my 4K TV for an 8K TV (of the same size) would be like expensive snake oil. The studios have to keep making newer TV's or the market will stagnate, but I've read numerous articles that say it's already as good as it gets - technology wise. One of them mentioned the Microwave, which has stayed the same for many years, as we reached the limits of what it can do.

The ONLY reason I would upgrade is if my TV broke down and 8K was the same price as 4K.

8K has 0.1% of the market in Japan (despite the upcoming Olympics being broadcast in 8K there) and 1% of the market worldwide atm.

I'm glad they're doing this, so we keep getting physical media but it does show that the market is smaller than it used to be. Merging to stay in business.

Eddie just repeated what many of us have to repeat all the time, “If you want the highest-quality picture and sound, disc is still the best way to get that in the home, particularly in the higher-definition formats — BD and 4K UHD.”

I am having flashbacks!

I have to point out that studios do not make TVs; TV manufacturers make TVs. Studios have not even shown any interest in 8K content as evidenced from your earlier post that shows that they have no presence in the 8K Association. And yes, TV makers want you to upgrade like every hardware manufacturer does.

Another benefit to 8K TVs is that the best ones come with tactile touchy feelie screens like what you find on fuzzy blacklight posters. While enjoying your 8K TV at arm's length viewing distance you can reach out and touch someone. Watching a nature/animal documentary becomes your own personal petting zoo!

It looks like all of the Amazon's outside of the USA are not currently shipping to international buyers. They will fulfill pre-orders, but are currently NOT fulfilling new orders.

You asked about this a few days back, Wendell, so here is all I could find with my TV:

I was watching a plain ol' HD stream from Netflix last night and when I press the "display" button on my Sony X900F's remote it showed me the bitrate being received at that instant as a static snapshot. I had to press the button periodically to see if it changed and it only refreshed the information at intervals, not in real time.

The results that I did get showed a received bit rate that varied from 3.62 Mbps-3.99 Mbps for this HD stream. I have not tried it with any other service or with 4K streamed content yet.

Do you have a source for that information?

I place international orders regularly and not being able to do so will make me a panda.
