Thought this was poignant:

"The depths of quick-fix receptivity that people will display, when the only real answer is personal sacrifice, is as staggering as it is mundane."

So many people on this weekday shift at work wearing face masks but no gloves, does that make any sense? Paranoid nitwits!

I was in WM the other day and I saw a bunch of people wearing gloves and mask.

See, I figured most people that are wearing that stuff are sick and are trying not to spread the virus. But sadly I think that most of the people that were wearing the equipment think it will protect them. The worst part is that they weren't even N95 mask.

Generally aren't masks that dentists and doctors wear used to prevent their germs spreading to patients? So I don't understand why people would wear surgical masks outdoors.

I guess the same goes for people in Asia (where they're common sight), are those masks really protecting from air pollution?

There is a girl in California that says she only wears her mask when the air quality is bad.

I think that most people in Asian usually wear mask to prevent getting others sick. Like if they have a cold or the flu irrc.

The virus is 0.125 microns on average, no mask can filter that out including the n95 unless it is airtight and then you cant breathe.

So buying stuff from Amazon could bring the virus home?

In theory maybe. Depends on if the person packing it is sick and how fast the package gets to you.

Also the study on cardboard was just that, a study. There are many factors to take into account on the longevity of the virus on surfaces.

Open, shake out contents, put packaging in the trash, wash hands. This isn't Chernobyl levels of decontamination.

Any package I get sits there for 3 days before I open it. Then after disposing of the packaging I wash my hands thoroughly...

Solid advice.

This is a long thread, so I'm probably repeating a previous post...but it's fascinating to me that soap and water are effective not because it kills the virus, but because it causes the virus to "slip/slide" off the skin.

I hope everyone is safe and healthy.

Opportunities to help in you town or city vary from place to place...I'd encourage you to do something for others in your community at this time. Schools are looking for volunteers to deliver meals to students quarantined at home. Check on a neighbor to see if you can run an errand for them. Animal shelters are looking for homes to foster dogs and cats while they are shutdown. Loan some movies to someone who is shut-in right now. The list is endless.

Tests have been done and N95 masks will filter out well over 95% of particles that are 10 times smaller than the coronavirus. Some 3M masks over 99%. Even surgical masks filtered out 63% of the .007 particles.

The N95 masks work, and along with respirators, they are the most important piece of equipment that is sorely lacking right now.

I'm more worried about the delivery people. I buzzed the Amazon guy in because I knew one of the two packages he had was for me but this dude was sniffling and lightly clearing his throat. Not a huge deal but he decided to hang around for a few minutes to chit chat. I know the guy - he's my usual delivery person - but I was slightly uncomfortable. Finally got rid of him by saying I wasn't supposed to let anyone in. This is another thing about this crisis - you have to treat people you see every day like they have bubonic plague.

I wore a mask and gloves at Safeway yesterday during senior hour. I saw several others doing so as well. I assumed everyone was just trying to protect themselves. The only reason masks aren't recommended is because there is a huge shortage and they want them to be used by medical personnel. But even a homemade mask or covering your face and nose with a scarf is better than nothing.

More than likely hay fever.
