What? Really? I thought the CAPS files for this were totally gone. this isn’t made from the color separation negatives?

So the only way to capture the 1994 one is to buy the 2019 one instead? Sorry I refuse to buy 2D in 4K, I mean why?

Not gone. They kept one CAPS machine for things like that.

Whoa, cool. TIL. Well hopefully the also kept the files for the original theatrical/home video version and will release it some day. 4K UHD direct from the files of that? day 1 buy for me. But as it stands I think I’m sticking with the deluxe CAV box from the 90’s. Still the best presentation of the original film, despite being standard def.

I concur.....though the subtler, truer colours added to a sense of depth that for me was more obvious throughout vs the BD, which comes very close in every respect. Possibly the least obvious upgrade of the discs I own, but I will take any improvement to ensure I own the best version...yada, yada.

At least that's what I tell myself when I spend so much on these dang discs...

It's under $20 at Wal-Mart & Amazon. Not bad. I think I'll get it even if it's not the biggest upgrade.

I don't understand why Aladdin and The Little Mermaid get a digipack from Target, but The Lion King got the standard edition with 5 crappy cards that use the same cliparts on all of them, and Target dare call that an "exclusive". Why didn't they make a digipack for this?!

Because they did. I mean who knows why, really. It is pretty disappointing though. Even the stock art for the preorder had a frame and Signature Collection roundel on the slipcover, so you could use the art cards as a fun way of mixing up the cover art, but alas, all we got was a clear (not even full - top and bottom exposed) protector with some extremely lackluster art cards stuck in the back. Best Buy won that round, but not by much. Both designs seemed rushed. Then again, they were treading on a "rerelease" in the same line, maybe they didn't think it would pay off to put as much effort in?

That's what worries me - it seems that Target doesn't do digipacks for reissues, only new releases (Signature Collection titles are "new releases" not reissues) so what if...what if Beauty and the Beast isn't going to get a digipack because it will be a reissue of the Signature release (like The Lion King and the Revivals and Pixar)?!? (I'm not even sure it's getting a 4K at this point).

It kindof sucks that we can't predict what's going to happen. I mean, Best Buy is almost certain to keep releasing steels. But they released steels for the Platinum line, switched to lentis for a few Diamond titles and the first quarter of Signature releases, so nothing is guaranteed. I just wish these vendors could "lock in" a specific format with Disney for each line prior to releasing these exclusives rather than switching back and forth. It's an annoyance for sure, especially when we get those random curveballs like Target's crappy TLK 4K or the absent BB exclusive for Beauty and the Beast.

Yes, it's annoying as hell. But you gotta realize that not everything is going to get the premium treatment, that you will never have complete uniformity in your collection, to just buy the premium sets when you can and not stress about it, and realize that there are ALWAYS going to be additional releases of these same movies coming out again a few years down the road in the future.

The standard edition 4K discs always hit $20 or less, even Disney and Marvel. A few big annual releases often become even cheaper at $10-12 on Black Friday. If you don't like the premium box, don't overpay.

What version of the regular Blu-Ray disc did you guys get in box with the 4k?

Kinda cheesed that the Australian release I picked up came with the diamond edition disc, not the signature disc.

The North American releases had the Signature Collection Blu-ray disc. I guess the UK and Australian releases had the Diamond Edition since the Signature Collection isn't being released there.

The UK version also has the Signature edition on the regular Blu-Ray.

I know that this sort of conversation is more common when discussed on Beauty and the Beast, but I think they changed the colors of this film as well. For instance the color of the sky behind Simba and Nala when they arrive at the elephants graveyard used to be blue but now it's grey.

It's amazing how this film went through so many edits in animation throughout its conversion to HD & 4K. Yet, it still remains a mixed bag.
On one hand, I understand that some changes, like Scar's shadow and the SFX dust, needed to be changed since one was an original error and the other stirred up controversy amongst families.
On the other hand, some alterations like Rafiki holding Baby Simba and the crocodiles during the "I Just Can't Wait To Be King" scene felt a bit unnecessary. As such, it would have been nice if the original unaltered forms of those scenes had made it to high definition quality.
