A beloved TV character is coming back. NBC has given a 13-episode series order to a new Dick Wolf crime drama series starring Christopher Meloni reprising his Law & Order: SVU role as Elliot Stabler. The SVU spinoff drama, which marks the actor’s return to Wolf World, revolves around the NYPD organized crime unit led by Stabler (Meloni). It is the first show to come out of the massive new five-year, nine-figure, multi-platform deal Wolf signed with Universal Television last month, which includes multiple series commitments.

I really want to understand why Meloni left SVU in the first place. For a start, his sudden departure seemed to totally blindside Mariska Hargitay, which is what really rubbed me wrong about it the most. Supposedly, his departure was due to failed contract negotiations, but I'm not sure if that explains why he never did a send-off episode and, more importantly, never came back to the show for even one episode during its eight subsequent seasons.
Now I wonder if he's going to end up upstaging SVU with this spinoff. I pretty much stopped watching once he left because the heart and soul of the show was the chemistry between Benson and Stabler, so will having a Stabler show, with no (or very little) Benson actually work? I don't know. I guess it's kind of weird that he's not just returning to SVU, but maybe the characters on that show have evolved to where Stabler is not a good fit? Or, perhaps Meloni just wanted a show where he could be the star? |

I would imagine, meloni felt his career had come to a crossroads at that point.
I think he wanted to do other projects and try and do other roles that would have required him to take time away from SVU. And he didn't wanna be stuck doing SVU for another 12 years unless his pay was worth it. Maybe he just wanted to give himself a chance to try other stuff before coming to terms with being only that guy from law and order with Ice T. I've always loved his character so I'm glad. |

He left TV to attempt a film Career but his only mainstream title was Man of Steel. The rest was direct to video garbage. So I’m sure his paychecks have gotten thinner and Stabler can bring him a Stable income.....

I think if he stayed as stabler he would have wanted big lead money. Hugh Laurie was getting like 8-10 million an episode for House towards the end. I wonder what Stabler was asking. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Mariska getting a huge bump when Meloni left to be solo lead? |

Funny enough, his best post-SVU role was a TV show, Nick Sax in Syfy's Happy (which unfortunately got cancelled after 2 seasons, though both seasons are on Netflix now).

I grew to dislike his character by the time he left the series. Then this year I rewatched most of the series and have found I like it more since he left than when he was on it. LOL
