EXCEPT for The Rise of Skywalker, which is player generated. Super annoying.
They're not really the "original" ones per se. They were redone digitally and don't look anything like the original subs from the film prints. They sort of stick out in how clean they look. They use the same font though.

Looking the caps over, there a signs the hosting site's compression isn't doing the new 4K nor 2011 blu any favors in terms of shared smeariness; here's hoping Caps-a-holic gets ahold of these soon. Still, the long range view shows the kind of over-refined smoothness you mentioned in the 4K, especially with those Jabba shots featuring smoke, haze. The new grading--what survives the conversion back to SDR--doesn't help; it seems weirdly drab and undifferentiated, which gives the 4K a flat look; there's less information in the palette. The odd detail may catch the eye, but it's all bobbing around on a sea of green.

Brass Tax has released a review for the original trilogy on youTube.

He says there isn't that much of a difference between the Disney+ versions and the disc versions. He says the discs vary in quality and while they are better than streaming, it's not a huge difference, slightly better resolution, slightly better colours. He also said, it depends on your equipment and if you sit further back from a smaller set, you might not notice any difference in resolution. He did say he might pick up the discs now because even with the minimal difference, the discs are better.

The question is: is that difference worth £200 / $250? For me, probably, because I want the boxset on the shelf and the extras (that I'll likely never watch!) Plus I wanna see them with my own two eyes and make my own mind up. This set will likely hold its value and so I could always sell it on.

I glanced at a few of the screenshots from the original movie and I have to say those caps are not representative of what I watched last night. I'm by no means an eagle-eyed viewer, but I'd notice if the details were all scrubbed and distorted like those caps are.

Just picked up the UHDs of III-VI and IX. Will probably wait for a price dip on the rest.

Love that our options are to stick with the average blu-rays of the inferior versions or buy the expensive UHDs that also look average and are still the inferior versions.

Did someone mention they could be defeated by selecting an alternate language--which switches to generated subs--then turning them off in player menu? ...For purposes of caps, etc.

The audio mixes are not the same on the regular blu rays and the 4K discs. For example, the surrounds are mixed quite differently in all of them as well as volume levels. Also, in empire, when R2 does flying overhead, it sounds way different on the 4K. I’m listening to the 7.1 Dolby core vs the dts hd ma.. So it’s 7.1 vs 7.1 in my setup.

Why would you expect them to be the same? The 7.1 core on the 4K is still a core of the Atmos mix, so if they've done some things differently for Atmos vs the DTS-HD MA 7.1 then they'll still be there in the TrueHD 7.1 core. They could have just used that 7.1 bed for the new Blu-rays, sure, but I think they wanted to to keep each mix separate.

I'm a happy customer, can't speak for others but I'm 5 movies in and Ive seen all the Starwars films on Blu-ray like a dozen times each or more....love the 4K's better (yeah room for more improvements) still worth every penny. For those reluctant to pull the trigger: I sold off my packaging with the Blu-rays and Bonus discs for half...then I sold my older Blu-rays of the OT and 2 installments of the New trilogy for $10.00 a piece. So all 9 4K films cost me a grand total of like $65.00

I would expect the dts mix to be equivalent to a fold down to Dolby 7.1 from atmos otherwise you’d be releasing two very different mixes simultaneously. That’s how atmos works. It’s supposed to be fully backwards compatible to 7.1. Hence why I would think they should be identical.

I know that's how Atmos works. But DTS-HD MA 7.1 is not Atmos. As I said, the intent was therefore to do two separate mixes, both designed for their respective channel-based/object-based soundfields and to not have the BD's 7.1 be a simple cast-off from the Atmos. And as much as the fold down thing is played up by Dolby it doesn't always work that well, e.g. the 7.1 TrueHD core of Blade Runner's new Atmos mix sounds downright odd, it's got far too much of an emphasis on effects and music over the dialogue.

I should think that whenever we get a new Blu that has DTS-HD and the UHD has Atmos then most of the time they're two separate mixes.

I went with the Bestbuy boxset. I've seen the slipcover editions and they are nice, but they don't blow me away.

After opening it up, I still prefer this set over the individual editions. However, there are some irritating quality control issues.

My outer box is a mess. There are tiny scratches all over it and they are very visible since the box is black and the scratches are silvery. Like everyone else, I ended up with a dark glue "stain." But I also noticed a slightly lighter "stain" where the j-card was, and an even lighter "stain" where the curbside sticker was.

Once I opened the box, I tried to pull the book out using the ribbon. However, as soon as I tugged on the ribbon, it just started unraveling. The tip of the ribbon now has almost an inch of frayed ends!

I haven't even gotten to the discs yet, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to see plenty of scratches. I just hope I don't have any duplicate discs.

I guess I'm gonna have to learn to live with its flaws, though. The set is too expensive to buy again and then give this one away as a gift. And exchanging it would be a nightmare. To Best Buy employees, the box is just packaging (like the cardboard box your TV comes in). Who cares what condition it's in? And scratches on a disc? That's OK too. They'll still play.
