For me it was instantly visible. The compression gets a little better in motion as the movie goes on but it's never great. The DV version has much higher black levels, but if it bothers you (like me) then you can just reduce the brightness a few clicks.

I’m watching the original Best Buy steelbook of the 4K UHD The Last Jedi now on my LG UK6090 television and Sony X700 4K player. When I put the disc on, a disclaimer screen popped up suggesting that, to get the full effect of the disc, I should have Dolby Vision equipment. The disc is playing perfectly well, and, when I look at the player display, it says HDR, as it should, instead of HDR>SDR or something of the sort.

Does that screen disclaimer pop up for every setup, regardless of player and television?

...or is my setup defaulting to play the disc in HDR10?

Either way, the picture looks great. I’m just wondering if I’m actually watching a second-best presentation mode, though.

I’m new to this 4K thing, if it’s not already apparent.

You need to update the firmware on the X700 and turn on and off Dolby Vision manually each time via the Screen Settings.

Remember to turn it off when you're not using Dolby Vision discs.

It's a minor pain in the ass. And yes - the DV transfer>HDR.

Gotcha. I turned on the Dolby Vision output on the Sony X700 screen settings (the player is up to date), and am now starting the movie over again. Thanks.

I did a bitrate video comparison further up the thread. I reviewed it again today and the I think the black levels are more silky on the DV. More detail in the DV transfer as well.

I'm keeping both 4K discs.

I think I do. It’s not a day vs night thing, but the picture seems to have a little more “oomph.” My display settings still say HDR, but I’m not sure if they’re supposed to say anything else. Maybe the improved picture is in my head...

It should say DOLBY VISION HDR when you press display on the X700 remote. And depending on your TV? You should get either an HDR pop up or a Dolby Vision pop up icon in the corner when you start the disc.

As for the question about "How do I know if my disc is DV or not?"

Look at the back of the disc - it should have a Dolby Vision logo on it. It's normally not obvious. Again - the implementation of this stuff isn't ideal.

Hmm. I’m not sure what else to do. I switched the player Dolby Vision output to on, and the screen display and upper right corner icon both still say HDR.

I wonder if I need to do something with the TV itself, but I already seem to have everything set properly on it.

are you going threw a amp? if so make Shure that lets Dolby vision pass threw. and if the amp does not let Dolby vision pass threw then the Sony 700 has a video HDMI out put and audio out put take video HDMI out to tv then take audio out to amp.

No amp. I use a sound bar. I’ve got the video HDMI set up well.

I’m thinking that my television (LG UM6910PUC) simply does not support Dolby Vision.

I was in the same situation last year. I bought a LG tv at Wal-Mart and it was only HDR10, not Dolby Vision or HDR10+. But the tv looked great still. Then I went down the TV rabbit hole, and sold my LG to my younger sister, and bought a Sony X950G.

The X950G does perform better than the LG because it is a Full Array Local Dimming TV, which means it can get better blacks, than my old LG. But, I wish I could afford OLED TV’s.

That Sony seems like a great option.

When this coronavirus stuff stabilizes and I can actually shop for a better 4K television in a Best Buy showroom, then I will look at choices.

On the other hand, though, I may end up doing nothing. This LG, despite no Dolby Vision, has been rocking my world for the past week and a half since I bought it and adjusted the picture settings just right. There will always be a better television out there than the ones that we each own, and I could drive myself insane thinking about it.

Here is a movie content review of Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi that I wrote after my theatrical viewing a couple of years ago.

That non-spoiler review still stands. The Last Jedi is my favorite entry of the Sequel Trilogy, and I wish that the ideas presented in this movie had been followed to fruition. Sadly, the majority of the Star Wars fanbase did not seem to agree.

It's a tremendous film in terms of iconic moments and spectacular visuals. The fight scene in Snoke's red chamber is a high point of the entire Sequel Trilogy, as is one particular scene involving a ship going into hyperdrive.

What do I think about the 4K UHD Blu-ray?

I am at a slight disadvantage, as is apparent from the dialogue in the last few posts in this thread, because my first HDR-capable 4K television that I purchased last week, an LG UM6910PUC, was the result of a great sale, but it does not support Dolby Vision.

Still, even without Dolby Vision, this disc presentation merits a perfect 10 in my eyes. I'm sure that, for those of you with Dolby capabilities, the results are even more noteworthy. I'm content to bask in the HDR10 for now, but I will look forward to revisiting this Blu-ray in the future if I upgrade sets soon.
