The Lowry processing used on both transfers is a pick your poison sort of deal and highly dependent on a given shot. For every bit that looks good on one may look terrible with the other and vice-versa.
To a lesser extent one can make the same arguments in favor of either transfers respective color grading but the 2011 transfers have serious color/chroma errors that riddles the entire trilogy. I am curious to when the DNR was applied, before or after the color grading. There are shots where the 2011 transfers resolve detail better, in spite of the sharpening and temporal reconstruction. Sometimes things only look better due to the sharpening or how the grading causes things to stand out more. With the "2019" transfers there are instances where it ultimately resolves more detail than the 2011 ones but there are numerous portions where there is actually less detail than perceived or actual detail. Simply watch the whole Death Star Destruction chapter 47 of ROTJ on either transfer to see what I mean. With the interior cockpit shots of Wedge and Luke the lighting strobes quite a bit and with the 2011 transfer the processing has a more consistent presence of detail whereas the 2019 their faces are blurry. Later the conversation between Leia and Han things are mostly stable for finer detail between them but due to the grading the 2011 might pop more whereas the 2019 looks more film like but it does have a minor bit of loss in fine detail. There are other times when the 2019 completely surpasses the 2011 transfer but then fails utterly in a fuzzy/blurry morass. It is damn shame considering the preDNRed film grain probably is not all that bad. Frankly they should be ashamed to have fraked this up and Lowry or whatever they are called now should apologize. Perhaps these were all intended for the 3D conversions but it should not have been the bases for the standard 2D transfer. I am disappointed with the final results. For me I like the grading of the 2019 versions but the inconsistency of detail due to the DNR is a grievous fault. There are no excuses for these to not be the definitive versions of the tweaked SEs. Pick your poison and enjoy, I suppose. This gallery is of screen captures from the 2019 and 2011 blu-rays. https://imgur.com/a/FgzmXDu Death Star Hologram planning scene. Those Lowry idiots have ruined countless films. They've always been a bunch of digitally perverted imbeciles.

Apart from the better colours, there is nothing her which makes me think the 2019 version is better than 2011, though I appreciate what others have said about the danger of making judgements based on screenshots. |

The holograms look better in the 2019 transfer when simply watching it. The colors are also far more consistent. YMMV. My biggest take away is that these releases would have been infinitely better if they had simply refrained from going full-bore DNR or just a judicial application. |

I guess I’m stronger with the Force than I realized.
It basically fell off on its own...not a mark on the box at all...flawless condition. Oddly enough, while the Game of Thrones Complete Series CE was bigger than I anticipated, this set is smaller. I was expecting Dirk Diggler and I got Ray Jackson instead. It’s a nice-looking box, but doesn’t jump out at me like I was hoping. The colors of the Death Star don’t really pop the way I thought they would. Now I have to do a full disc inspection. ...status report in 20 minutes. |
