They do look fantastic, albeit with very blotchy, dupey grain owing to them being a print from a filmout etc etc

yeah and i think some of the blotching was also from the early cinema video cam they used, so it looks a bit extra blotchy above and beyond. But I still prefer that to DNR and trying to fix that all up. I thought I recalled once reading that they wanted to fix up artifacts from the early digital cam they used to shoot it.

I have ascended past seeing noise or grain and am solely looking upon beautiful detail, such exquisite detail compared to current measly offerings and an instant yearning for fan 4K remasters of the prequels a la the fan 4K OT.

That there is good old fashioned photochemical grain that's been copied and copied and copied some more, hence the yellow and blue flecking all over it. It's dupe city.

You've 'ascended', eh? Good for you. The grain sticks out like a sore thumb to me and that's in 1080, never mind in 4K, though seeing it in motion would be the ideal thing.

These took some time, but it was worth it. I'll start working on TESB and ROTJ.

At this stage the adjustments were mostly done but the color balance was tuned yet, so don't take these as a reference in terms of color tone (although contrast, saturation, pop, vibrance and such are reasonably well done). Her face is too pink and some other shifts like that. Trying to think where I stored the ones where I had partially fixed the balance and made her skin tone match how the 35mm actually looked, kinda more yellow and less pink to her skin.

anyway ignore the not really correct color balance above, in that version of the scanned image, but do note the vibrance, lack of DNR, contrast and pop compared to the blu-ray
Really not wanting to be a dick here, but I watched this only last night and remember it looking so much better than this. So put the 2011 blu back in and compared the first two captures. There is no comparison if you are valuing vibrance, contrast and pop.
So why can't I see what you are seeing ?

maybe not remembering correctly?
maybe seeing one on a fancy HDTV and my images on some crummy TN laptop screen or something?

i'll try to dig up the screen cap from more or less the same frame as my first image

from what I recall the 2011 blu was a bit more washed out, her gown didn't have as much pop, her face had less contrast and less difference from her tones compared to her handmaiden behind, etc.

ok, here we go found a couple:
my scan from 35mm:

2011 blu-ray:

I think you can see a pretty huge difference in pop and all. and look at her eyebrow, on mine you barely see a few eye brow hair streaks on the blu-ray it is literally one single solid blob, DNR'ed to pure wax.

or look at this, look how waxy the 2011 blu-ray looks:

These are fantastic to see, thank you. I've been enjoying the hell outta my Boxed Set for the past week, and can tell intuitively that the transfers are better than the 2011 BDs... but these are the first side-by-side screenshots that definitely show the improvements. When seen side-by-side I don't LOVE the teal bias in the new TESB caps, but I don't "feel" that teal when I watch it. In particular, the Vader/Fett cap is a bit of a bummer 'cuz the teal wash eliminates the separation of colors... but I'm not gonna sweat it 'cuz the improvement in detail is so pronounced, and if it does end up bothering me I've certainly color-graded out the teal from many other BD releases in the past, so that'll be no sweat. Great job; can't wait til I get to EMPIRE in my current saga run-through, so I can see it start-to-finish instead of just jumping around scenes!

Nope , had all images on 75'' 4k screen and just switched inputs between hdmi 2 and 3 which gave blu ray player and ps4 as sources .
And that much maligned disc is far better .
Looking at Padme's hairdo - it goes into a fan shape behind the goldy ornament, and I can see indivdual thin braids making up that fan shape. Not visible on the other shot.
Likewise the moles on both sides of her face and the crease that runs a short way across the centre of her forehead.
Perhaps the ps4 does not show me what you are seeing via pc?

Beautiful. The 2020 has broken the chain of subjugation of the Evil Magenta Empire (the Princess races home...but not before it can trace her nose with a purple sharpie).

When the 2011 seems to be edging the new disc on detail, it's often that oppressive hue getting everywhere like those chewables they give to kids to reveal the plaque on their teeth.

Issues of DNR and de-graining aside, 2020's is a pleasing image.

Also while not everyone caress about the special features, why not include all the extras from the DVDs and make this the ultimate package?

Many thanks to HD Goofnut for the A/B screenshots of the 2011 vs 2020 Blu-ray shots. Seeing them this way, I have to admit that the new transfers don't look nearly as "flat" or "washed out/undersaturated" as I initially thought.

I don't want to use the incorrect term here, so Geoff or someone with more knowledge than me jump in...but looking at those 4K77 v 1.4 caps, the images seem "brighter". Is this simply due to the fact that the contrast levels of a release print are very much different from the OCN (or whatever Lowry/Reliance scanned to make the new masters)?
