If your TV has Dolby Vision, get something else. If you have a Samsung TV or a projector, the 420 is okay. It's built very cheaply, however.

So here's an interesting discovery I made. A while back in the Frozen UHD thread, I mentioned that I was experiencing an audio drop out during the end credits (1:32:42) when watching on my 820. I could pause and resume after the drop, and audio would come back. It was literally just that one spot that caused it to drop out. No matter what I tried, audio would always cease there, whether the player or receiver was doing the decoding.

Well, I had the same thing occur in Attack of the Clones today. Audio dropped out at 1:04:39 during the scene with Watto.

Through a bit more experimentation, I found the issue. In order to keep video and audio synced, I was having the 820 delay audio by 100ms. As soon as I disabled this by bringing the delay back to 0ms, audio played perfectly in both spots on both discs.

It would be interesting to see if others could replicate this by testing those spots with a delay of 100ms on the 820.

Fortunately, it's a manageable situation, because I can just have the receiver handle the delay instead of the player. But if others have the problem too, there would seem to be an issue with the audio delay on the 820 on some discs.

As an additional tidbit, if I adjusted the delay to a small number (10ms), the dropouts did not occur.

Holland Freeze of both Midway & Knives Out 4K UHD Disc with Dolby Vision on Pan. DP-UBP9004

I can confirm that both Lionsgate discs [Midway] (2 times freeze) and [Knives out] (1 time freeze) freeze on the EU Panasonic DP-UBP9004. I purchased both discs at Zavvi UK, both being the UK 4K/UHD steelbook version. The freezing only happens with Dolby Vision enabled. With HDR10 enabled both discs play fine.

Hey guys I have a Panasonic 4K UB-820 player and stumbled into this thread after Knives Out 4K BD froze up at the 2:01 spot. I actually bought a second copy of the movie which also didn't work before I considered it could be a problem with the player itself (I was also thinking maybe it could be a disc authoring problem but apparently other players have no issue with this disc).

Is there any new info on this? Have Panasonic offered up that a FW will eventually fix this or should I just throw this player in the trash and buy one that works?

Thanks.

Yes I can test and confirm that however it's a big loss in functionality to have to turn off DV especially on films like Knives Out that definitely have DV enhancements compared to regular HDR.

Knives Out is literally an SDR grade inside an HDR container. If you're seeing some kind of obvious shift in picture quality vs HDR10 or even the regular SDR BD then something is awry in one or all of those playback modes.

Well, it’s the Rise of Skywalker The Last Jedi scenario all over again! (Of course the color upgrade with WCG is splendid.)

We saw Knives at the cinema and not sure this would have much in the way of punch or pop for HDR. TLJ on the other hand had missed opportunities imho.

Last edited by gkolb; 04-15-2020 at 05:06 AM. Reason: color upgrade from WCG

I will defer to the review on this website which makes the argument that the HDR treatment for this film is noticeably better than the SDR option.

I will also make sure to just leave my player with disabled DV unless I pore over the disc reviews and find out whether a particular disc is suitably enhanced to turn the feature on for that particular film. What a joke.

4K on disc is a format for collectors, nobody should be making excuses for anyone when expensive new releases have these types of issues. With attitudes like these physical media is dead.

Got the 820 today. A few questions:

- The power cable seems loose and doesn't seem to fit all of the way. Is this normal? Bizarre
- Is there a way to program the remote to power off a non-Panasonic TV (I have Samsung)
- For the HDR TV Type, should I leave it on "Middle or High Luminance?" (I have a Samsung Q70R)

Thanks!

Choose middle luminance, it works better or your TV.

The power cable is not tight but shouldn’t be loose either.

Can’t answer the remote part, I use a universal remote.

just wanted to stop by here and say that the PANASONIC 820 is the best 4k player that I've owned to date. Very happy with it and it's given me ZERO problems in the year and a half I've owned it.

That’s not the point. Knives Out freezes on these Panasonic’s when playing back with Dolby Vision.

Just to clarify, the general consensus is that this model is the best player to date correct?

Way ahead of you chief: Knives Out 4K UHD (2019)

But who said anything about picture quality?

It's the freezing that occurs on multiple Panasonic players playing back Knives Out in DV at approximately 2h 01m that I was hinting at w/ref to matey having ZERO problems with his player. Lot of folks have had playback problems with Midway too.

I was just busting your chops with your own quote from a few posts back. Not sure if you recognized it though.

As for the issues with the Knives Out disc freezing...

I'm just glad this thread is back to normal after the hostile takeover this past month. I'm sure chip75 has a lot more time on his hands now.

Beware of brand new members with the same "issues". It's a sure bet.
