Almost true - plenty of great pizza joints in CT and NJ (where many of the children/grandchilden of the old school NYC pizzamakers moved to get away from city life). I was never wanting for awesome pizza when growing up in CT and NJ. Of course, the folks in the Chicago area do OK, too!

There aren't very many Italians making pizza in NYC anymore - they're mostly made by Mexicans, Guatemalans and Ecuadorians.

I moved from NYC to LA in 2013 and it's a real pizza desert out here. I mean, this is a major issue for me!

There are only a couple places in the city that do it right, but none that are close to me in Hollywood. I have had to lower my pizza standards significantly since moving out here.

Any place that uses the plastic spacer in the middle is garbage. No self respecting pizza joint would use those. Also, not enough grease on the box from the pepperoni.

You're gonna tell me that Papa John's, Lord of Pizza, isn't a self-respecting pizza point? Don't be draggin' my papa.

Papa John's pizza is terrible and the founder is a racist. If you're gonna buy pizza, go local, or go home..... Don't support these chains. Now this is coming from a guy that lives in Chicago, so I apologise to all you that live in rural areas where I know the chains are the only ones around, but life ain't fair and pizza is a way of life.....

My favorite caption of this picture was someone saying Papa John looks like a character who was bit in a zombie movie and is trying to hold it together and hide it from the group.

Agreed, there are quite a few places in New Haven and the surrounding areas in CT that have pizza every bit as good as anywhere in NY

Wow, yea dude if you're such a snob that a plastic saucer is going to ruin your enjoyment of a good pizza have no fun with that.

Also your other statement that , outside of big cities it's nothing but chains...couldn't be further from the truth.

To dally witty , I can't remember where you are in the UK, I had some really good Neapolitan pizza in Liverpool, the people running it were real Italians , certainly there's better than papa John's where you are?

Was this a regional thing? I can't fathom how I never saw this. Sure I spent part of those years being treated for depression, but I wasn't out of touch with the world. I remember the burger on the rye bun with cheddar(?) and grilled onions. I loved those. But I don't ever recall seeing pizza.

The pizza thing failed. Not sure if it was a regional roll out or not. It was still being done in some specific locations.

Little Caesars round pizza is trash, I don't care what any pizza snobs think, their Detroit style pepperoni deep dish is pretty damn good

Many quality Neapolitan pizza places in the SF Bay Area. Like this:

Zero Zero Pizza:

Pizzeria Delfina:

Tony's Pizza Napoletana:

There are TONS of Neapolitan style pizza joints in the bay, although pizza joint isn't the correct term to describe them, they are just about all high end restaurants catering to an upscale customer base, the pizza is good no doubt but it is very cultivated, created by master chefs.

I always give a shout out to the best "pizza joint" in San Jose, Vito's New York style pizza on Story and White , it's in the GHETTO, it's a sports bar and 95% of the clientele are Mexican American gang bangers followed by a few Italians. The owners, cooks everyone are from Sicily plus the sons that grew up here, they are the real deal with the open shirts , hairy chest and tons of gold chains.

So there ya go Cinema84, it might not be located in NYC but the pizza is incredible, I doubt you would last 1 minute in the place though it's in a rough area with a very rough customer base.

You can get shitty pizza in New York too ya know, but bottom line is if you're out, you've had a few drinks, the pizza is hot and ready, it's gonna disappear quickly.

Oh, I've been to Vito's once. Though I'm a Salvadoran non-gang banger, I had a good experience there.

Pizza in the Bay Area is top notch and among the elite stretching all the way to Napa whether you're looking for Neapolitan (more my speed), Chicago-style (Little Star and Zachary's are on point), New York style (I prefer Arinell), Detroit style (Tony's) and plain no frills but tasty pizza joints (Napoli in Vallejo comes to mind). We have it good in the Bay!

Yea what Boggle said yeaaa.

To counter what indravyu or whatever his name is said that most pizza in new York is now made by ecuadorians and such, go to Sal and Carmine's buddy, it's on Broadway between I can't remember like 103-105th street or something, proper rude, loud, cuts you off and could care less what you have to say New York Italian guy runs the place and makes the pizza ,

Yeah, SF Bay area has a decent sized Italian population, so they know what's up.

Portland, OR, on the other hand, has terrible pizza (at least they did when I lived there in the 90s). Papa Johns, Dominos and Pizza Hut were basically gourmet pizza in Portland.
