The same goes for Taste of Cherry. While I'm underwhelmed by the new pics for The Lady Eve, the clip and screenshots for Taste of Cherry definitely look like from the new digital restoration.

I’d say that a good 1/4 of my DVR is filled with her movies, and another 1/4 with Jean Harlow. It baffles me how two of the most popular actresses of that era are so overlooked where blu-ray is concerned.

I really want Baby Face, Stella Dallas, and Ball of Fire right away. That would be a good start.

I'm a Scorsese fan but not completist; however, I'm intrigued enough to pick this up as a blind-buy.

These are all most enjoyable.

Obviously, you have to take into account that the first two are very early, college student films. Very amateur and no-budget shorts. They are both still quite amusing.

"The Big Shave" is very enjoyable for its brief couple of minutes. The editing, music, and camera work definitely indicate what is to come.

The two 1970s docs. are fantastic.

"Italianamerican" is Scorsese's most personal work ever, obviously. You spend an afternoon (reportedly Easter Sunday, 1974) at the Scorsese household, hanging out with him and his parents, as they tell stories of the old days. It's incredibly charming.

"American Boy" is a HOOT. You spend an evening with Steven Prince, who many will recognize as the gun salesman in "Taxi Driver", who also had been road/tour/career managers for both Neil Diamond and Neil Young. He is a natural born storyteller (and BS artist), and the tales he spins are so vivid and hilarious and frightening that you feel like you've SEEN, rather than heard, his tales. Look for George Memmoli, too, a character actor who was the "This guy is a mook" guy from "Mean Streets". Everyone, including Scorsese, seems zonked out of their minds the whole time, LOL. Like hanging out with some high friends while they tell anecdotes. No spoilers on the stories told, but my favorite one involves a gas station in the desert in the middle of the night, LOL. You'll see....


No, overall, these are all worth having, and the bonus stuff looks interesting, too.

Stanwyck didn’t do many comedies, but she was so good at them. The Lady Eve and Ball of Fire are two of my most wanted.

Context is important. During the HTF visit last summer Criterion's Lee Kline stated the elements for The Lady Eve were in real bad shape, and the choice was between waiting for a more thorough restoration that may never come, or remastering using compromised sources - a choice they hadn't committed to at that time (or at least hadn't revealed they had committed to). If this is coming out now it seems like they did the latter.

This does look like a good sign that an upgrade of Taste of Cherry is forthcoming. However, the current DVD is OOP. Does Criterion let titles go OOP when an upgrade is coming? I thought Criterion titles only went OOP when they lost the rights.

If they've got an upgrade in the works, and run out of stock, there's no point in them pressing more, so they'll let the original edition of the DVD go OOP.

I'm definitely in for "The Lady Eve" and "The War of the Worlds". I wonder if Criterion nabbed some of those Paramount "Imprint" titles with "The Duelists" and "Sorry, Wrong Number".
