Default Setting up my levels?

Ok so after i ran the audyssey my speakers seemed low. So i went up a notch

My left was -1.0 db so i picked it up +3.5 my question here is would i be hurting any settings the audyssey did?

Yes, your receiver will explode.

Sorry, I am just kidding. I tweak Audyssey calibration all the time. I must have run it at least 50 times. If you want, get an SPL meter for around $50 and do a better job of matching the speaker levels. Human ears are not as accurate as SPL meters. Read Calibrating Your Audio with an SPL Meter.

Big daddy, why are the settings always so low with the Audessy and others? I must have done mine like 20x, it kept setting speakers to large and the levels were turned way down.

I think it is because Auydessey is basically conservative in nature and it is really a building block to work from. I too have consistently played with my settings after Auydessey an have yet to really settle in. If I am off base here guys, please chime in....?

According to Klipsch's website, these are the frequency responses of your speakers.

RF-5: 34Hz-20kHz ±3dB

RC-64: 62Hz-21kHz +/-3dB

RS-3: 61Hz-20kHz±3dB

RB-61: 43Hz-23kHz +/-3dB

Forget about what Audyssey says. On the back of the subwoofer, turn the crossover frequency to the maximum point. You set the frequencies in the receiver. Set ALL your speakers to SMALL. In your receiver's menu, set the following low pass and high pass frequencies:

RF-5: 60Hz

RC-64: 80Hz

RS-3: 80Hz

RB-61: 60Hz

Set the Low Pass filter setting of your subwoofer to 80Hz.

This is the exact reason why I am not really a fan of Auddysey because that's exactly what it is-an auddysey, you'll never get there.... When I had my Denon 3808CI, I ran the audyssey eq to just to callibrate distance and disable it afterwards as it softens up the sound too much. Manual i set up is always the way to go.

I never ran the Audyssey when I had my Onkyo but I did try the YPAO with my Yamaha and the speaker distances were bang on but it set some speakers to large and x-over frequency was over 100hz. I can't remember exactly what it was but I adjusted them all to small and x-over at 80hz and it sounded better than what I had them set up at.

I just recently "tried" calibrating my speakers with an SPL meter following Big Daddy 's thread and the speaker levels were pretty much what the YPAO had it at.. just a notch or 2 off on the surrounds so the receivers setting I would say is almost as good or just as a Radio Shack SPL.

to the OP, adjusting your level trims won't hurt your audyssey settings however adjusting your frequency cutoff to a lower frequency to what Audyssey has set is not optimal as Audyssey hasn't eq'd for that, however adjusting to a higher frequency cutoff will be no problem as audyssey has eq'd for that. I should note that if you do lower your frequency cutoff Audyssey filters remain in play however the rest as they say aren't guaranteed as audyssey hasn't eq'd for that range.

Basically if audyssey set your fronts to 80hz going up to 100hz or above is good, but going below 80 to say 60 is not.

do you have anything like this for polks?

i went thru the settings yesterday. i switched my eq from audyssey to manual and did some tweaks

the bass seemed to be lacking BIG TIME.

i didnt have time to fiddle around with everything.

is there any way to see the audyssey EQ settings?
the only way i can see any eq settings is when i go into 'manual' for eq.

Hey big daddy...

Is this what I should have my Klipsch's set at in the AVR for the crossovers?

RF-83 - 29Hz-21kHz +/-3dB - set to 60 crossover?
RC-64 - 62Hz-21kHz +/-3dB - set to 80 like you said above.
RS-62's - 50Hz-23kHz +/-3dB - should this be 60 or 80?

Thanks for your help in advance.

All he did was look up the frequency ranges. You can do the same thing in the manuals or on Polk's website.

You could try setting the 83's lower if your AVR will allow it, but I would give at least 10hz (more like 15-20, personally) to allow for rolloff. I'd set the 62's to 80hz.

Alternatively, you could set everything to 80hz (THX standard) and it will create a very smooth and even bass response across the board. That's what I do.

Hey thanks for the reply aramis. Yeh, I have them all set at 80 now. Cool, I really didn't hear any difference changing the 83's to 60.

It's such a small frequency range (60hz to 80hz) that I doubt you would, honestly. I'm a big proponent of just running them at 80hz with the exception of speakers like the DefTech supertowers that have a sub built-in. Let the sub do it's thing and let the speakers do what they're best at.

Aramis is correct. Look at the frequency response of the speakers in the manual or the manufacturer's website and set the crossover around 15Hz to 20Hz higher.

Some manufacturer's give you two frequency responses. Always look at the one that has +-3db. The other one is exaggerated and B.S.

One thing to note is that both Audyssey and YPAO are not particularly accurate with lower bass frequencies, typically losing accuracy below 35 Hz.

It's best to use Audyssey and YPAO to set proper distances and delay, while then using your SPL meter to set proper levels as shown in the handy guide mentioned earlier.
