Default Panic Room - Cancelled Release

EzyDVD has a preorder for Panic Room from Shock due July 1st.

Now if this eventuates its a worldwide first for the title on Blu-ray HOWEVER it is from Shock...Soooo who knows where they will be getting their master from and what aspect ratio it may be presented in. So please temper any expectations.

From Sony. They're getting the master from Sony. Do people think Shock jumps on Pirate sites to grab HDTV masters, or something? They license a title, and get the master supplied to them.

Nah I don't believe that, because if that was the case, then they would have used the 2:35 correct aspect ratio HDTV rip of April Fools Day that was quite easily available online prior to its release, as opposed to the cropped version they used.

I think maybe what they mean is will it be a nice newer transfer, or will it be a DVD era HD Master Sony had lying around that's not high enough standard to put out themselves, but fine to license to a country with a small market like Australia.

I know what the OP meant. But I just get sick of the derogatory/dismissive comments about indie labels from folks who won't spend more than $10 on a catalogue title, but expect said indie label to bankroll a 4K restoration by themselves if the rights holder won't supply them with a high quality master.

Where exactly did I say that I hope or expect a 4K restoration from Shock? I simply mentioned it was from Shock so everyone knew it wasn’t gonna be a Sony release. I know Shock is a budget label. You know Shock is a budget label. Possibly most people on this forum probably know that. However seeing as overseas members may read about this and get excited expecting a new master and restoration I’m simply saying temper your expectations. Shock sometimes uses really good masters in the correct aspect ratio and sometimes they use HD TV transfers of okay quality and sometimes their releases are in the wrong aspect ratio. We will have to wait and see. All we know for sure is that because it’s Shock they ain’t got the funds to be doing a 4K restoration and seeing as this seems to be one of the most wanted titles that has never released on Blu Ray I expect a lot of people will be wanting this to be the greatest quality ever. Honestly I’m not one of them. As long as it’s in the correct aspect ratio Im excited to retire my DVD and add it to my collection.

Since its from shock expect lossy audio. Maybe cropping depending on which master they use, otherwise its much better than no release at all

I have the loaded three disc Panic Room DVD with a ton of extras. Seriously doubt Shock will replicate that.

This is David Fincher it deserves better TBH

If you’re not happy with the master/Blu-ray, it’s not going to be Shock’s fault. If Sony was releasing the disc themselves, it’d be all smiles around here, but a Sony release would use exactly the same master they’re supplying for Shock.

Annnnnd in the interim we already have folks thinking the audio could be lossy. This thread is DOA.

The master will likely either be an old DVD era HD transfer or perhaps even a HDTV broadcast master. It could be the 4K remaster that has been rumoured for years.

I am suggesting the audio will likely be a 5.1 Dolby Digital track at 448kbps as most if not all their releases apart from discs mastered from Paramount have been DD lossy. If the audio is this, i wont be that happy about it but I will accept it.

Why try to warn people off it before the specs are confirmed . It's in mine, yours, and all other Australian Blu-ray enthusiasts best interest, to incourage sales from foreign and domestic consumers to help our struggling market flourish, not to discourage them... Once the specs are known, if it turns out not to be in the original aspect ratio, and/or the audio is lossy rather than lossless, only then should you be informing people about these issues.

I have my problems with Shock releases sure but for the most part they put out fairly great stuff that wouldn't have came here otherwise, I honestly have more problems with another studio's releases here due to the fact they charge double more or less what Shock would despite their PQ not being worth the price.

I know it's a pain to be the first one to find out about one of their more infamous releases like I Married an Axe but there will be somebody who will buy this release and tell us all if it's good or sub-par. That rumored 4K release from Sony would be better since Shock tends to be very light on the special features sure but if the film looks good on this release then I'm all for it, we need to support local releases and this price is a steal compared to what it would cost elsewhere.

We all know about Shock's sometimes infamous releases if you are on the Australian board but do we really need to scare off people who don't visit here much by bringing those releases up again? They aren't no Áccent and some of their releases look wonderful.

Yes if Sony was releasing this it would likely be smiles all round because we might actually get a 4K release that was rumoured almost 2 years ago. But its not - instead here we are with Sony licensing out the film for what one would expect would be low fee to an independent budget label in Australia. That's great for Shock, good on them. Hope it sells really well for them. If its in the correct aspect ratio I will buy it. But it's disappointing for those who love the film and had wanted Sony to care enough about it to spend the time and money to release a top level presentation of it. I mean its directed by David Fincher, it stars Jodi Foster and has the film debut of Kirsten Stewart - how in the hell in 14 years of the Blu-ray format has Sony never seen fit to release this? Their DVD was one of the most special features packed releases ever - they cared enough then but since then what they've washed their hands of it?! So while I'm happy its getting a Blu ray release finally, and for $12.95 or less I'd never complain, its just my expectations and the expectations for all those people in the 4K Wishlist thread is that Sony cared enough about the film to release it themselves in 4K. But instead we get a budget release. Possibly the same master used for the recent iTunes version. Some say it looks good, some say it looks mediocre. Or maybe its not that version. Who knows. At least we are getting it on physical media. I just hoped for more. Not from Shock but from Sony.

I was talking about their recent releases in the last year of so. U-Turn DD 5.1, Clockers DD5.1, Nowhere to Run DD2.0, Peggy Sue Got Married DD5.1, Mobsters poor DD2.0 @192kbps. Hideaway DD2.0, Midnight Run DD5.1, Hud DD5.1, Mo Better Blues DD2.0, Fright Night DD5.1, Monster Squad, MBV, Slap Shot, Starman. Dead Men wear no plaid etc

I am not advocating anyone against picking this up but I am warning based on Shocks recent input that it could have Dolby Digital and/or cropping but until the disc actually comes out this is pure speculation.

I like how you say recent releases, but you quote stuff from 2018 that's the same vintage as Shock releases with lossless sound. Also, Sony's Fright Night had lossy audio, too.

You still danced about and missed my point altogether.

If Sony was releasing it on Blu-ray, they would use the same master as Shock. 4K Blu-ray isn't even part of the discussion. That's all conjecture.

So how do you know that Sony were to release this they would use the same master they are giving Shock? You mean like the master that Sony gave Shock for “The One” where the Sony Blu Ray is in the 2:35 aspect ratio and Shocks version is cropped. So how is that the same master? Sure you’re right Sony provided it - that film isn’t in the public domain - so maybe I should have rephrased my initial post to say “I wonder where the master Sony provided them came from... is it from an HD broadcast in the 1:78 ratio (cause networks don’t want bars at the top or bottom) Is it the version recently put on iTunes.” The reality is no one including you knows or can comment on the quality, the aspect ratio, the audio specs that Sony is providing until Shock releases it. Hopefully it’s good and if it’s not we can all blame Sony for not giving a shit about a film that a lot of people love and want to be treated right.
