To be honest, I don't see a big difference between 1080p and 4K. The most transformative thing (for me) is HDR/Dolby Vision which I can see a massive difference regardless of the viewing distance.

Have you tried HLG? Geoff D said of the HDR material on the Spears & Munsil montage he thought HLG looked the best on his set.

IIRC there are 4 test patterns, one being a resolution chart (presented in terms of per picture height), press Pause when on this chart to stop it from advancing to the next chart. With this chart you can check your H and V resolution and where you can see res vs distance.

PS: IIRC, Stacey said there would be a newer version of the test disc this fall.
I have not purchased the Spears & Munsil test disc and with a newer version coming out this fall I am glad that I waited.

I have concerns that this product might be too advanced for me, but I am not afraid of a challenge, either, if the potential benefits justify the effort.

My not being about to see the difference between 1080p and 4K is more down to viewing distance more than anything else. I can see a difference but it's not big like the difference between SD and HD.

You guys across the pond must have huge living rooms. I’m 9 feet away in the HT but only 6 feet in living room.

You commented on the advantage HDR and I was just curious if you had tried the HLG version. Some info here. The Oppo UHD players can play HLG content, don't know about other players.

You are retired, no one is going to give you a test.

Try the Beginners Guide here and see what you think about it. If you read a lot of post here many will use the term “nits” while the text may use cd/m². 1 nit = 1 cd/m² (Candela per square metre)

The UB820 and UB9000 do HLG.

When you contract with Best Buy to do a calibration is the client allowed to watch the proceedings? If so, do you explain what you are doing?

Just trying to think of ways movie enthusiast could learn a little about how their display works and have a better appreciation of the technology.

I prefer for the client to see what I’m doing while I explain the reasoning why I’m doing anything. Many clients however, just don’t care as long the job is done and left me alone. Whether I do the work for BestBuy, other stores clients or my own clients, I always invite the customers to see what I’m doing.

I have a Panasonic UB820. I don't know if it has that feature.

Edit: According to sapiendut the Panny does indeed have HLG. I'll check it out when I get the chance.

If only you made long distance house calls; I can't find anyone in a 100 mile radius of me that professionally calibrates TVs. I do not place much confidence in the teenagers working at my local Best Buy to do such work.

Are you serious? I would have guessed that the cost for such international service would be very cost prohibitive for your far flung clients; they must be rich!

Usually there are about 10 of them putting their money together To fly me there. And they all do both audio and video calibration.

You must be really good at what you do for people to spend that kind of money to import your services.

If anyone is using Internet services across Europe right now like Virgin Media, Vodafone & Netflix; it is not looking good at the moment. Virgin Media in the UK & Ireland is currently suffering from a major communications network outage in their internet services for the past number of hours. Vodafone in Germany is suffering from intermittent issues for anyone surfing or streaming on their service. Netflix is apparently having an website outage as well within Europe with a message given to it's subscribers saying "something went wrong". A report from the Daily Mail newspaper in the UK says that customers in european countries are receiving "NSES-504" error messages when on the service.

Having calibrated Audio and Video equipment just happens to be my definition of rich.

Also, having a working dishwasher ... that too.
