No, they don’t “always” have masters with and without. Depends who made the film, and how old, etc, and if they were just a distributor in a certain region.

Regardless, those Truffaut films weren’t scanned from the negative (which wouldn’t have subtitles added) but from a US IP or print, which WOULD have them already burnt in.

Looking around, it seems like despite this site and Wikipedia claiming Zaza is a 1939 title (given the original theatrical release date of January 14, 1939), although IMDB and most other places claim it as a 1938 title. For 1938, there's two remaining slots left, and for 1939, there's one remaining slot left, so it'd likely have a better shot as a 1938 title, with the full list of possibilities for both years below (ommitting any films that have been ruled out):

When Kino and Shout signed their deals with StudioCanal, so did Criterion for around 20 titles. Kino has released 100 or so films since then, Shout around 30 or 40, Criterion 1 (Army of Shadows). Even a newer label like Film Movement has released over a dozen.

So, I'm never happy when I hear something I care about is with Criterion, knowing that it may take years for them to release it. I know they're the biggest label in the business and have a cult following by fans, blindly buying anything they release, there are other labels that have similar followings, but at a much, much smaller scale. I could care less for about 2/3 of their releases, but I know I'm in the minority, at least in the so-called cinephile world.
As much as I love their releases, I was pretty disappointed when I heard that they had Winchester '73. I wish Kino would have acquired that one. I'm 58 years old. By the time Criterion gets around to releasing it, I might be pushing up daisies....

It's a shame since the 4K master has been done for years (I saw it last Summer in theaters). I also don't know why they sit on upgrades for films that have had new masters done for years ("Pickup on South Street", "Thieves Highway", and "Le Trou" to name a few).

Whyever they do it, it's a dumb strategy. I've imported Le Trou and Pickup on South Street from the UK, they're never getting a sale from me now. Same for Thieves Highway if it was a title I was interested in.

No Man of Her Own (1932)

FAST AND LOOSE (1930) B&W 70 Minutes 1.20:1 Not Rated
You can buy anything you want… except love! Carole Lombard (Nothing Sacred), Miriam Hopkins (Becky Sharp) and Frank Morgan (The Good Fairy) star in Fast and Loose, a raucous and romantic pre-Code comedy. Marion (Hopkins) and Bertie (Henry Wadsworth, Applause) are the irreverent children of Bronson Lenox (Morgan), one of the wealthiest men on Long Island. When Marion abandons her family’s aristocratic lifestyle for humble car mechanic Henry Morgan (Charles Starrett, Our Betters) and Bertie begins to keep company with chorus girl Alice O’Neil (Lombard), Bronson will do anything to shoot down Cupid’s arrows. Wonderfully directed by Fred C. Newmeyer (Queen High) and co-starring Winifred Harris (Night Must Fall) as the matriarch of the Lenox family.

MAN OF THE WORLD (1931) B&W 74 Minutes 1.20:1 Not Rated
Screen legends and real-life husband and wife William Powell (The Thin Man) and Carole Lombard (My Man Godfrey) light up the screen in the unforgettable pre-Code romance Man of the World. Michael Trevor (Powell) and his partner Irene (Wynne Gibson, City Streets) run a tabloid in Paris and make their living blackmailing rich Americans. When Michael falls for Mary Kendall (Lombard), the niece of one of his targets, he vows to leave behind his selfish ways to be with her. The jealous Irene, however, will stop at nothing to sabotage their plans for a new life together. The on-screen chemistry between Powell and Lombard was real—the couple fell in love and married shortly after the filming of the movie. Man of the World was marvelously directed by Richard Wallace (The Young in Heart) and written by legendary screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz (Citizen Kane).

NO MAN OF HER OWN (1932) B&W 85 Minutes 1.37:1 Not Rated
Legendary Hollywood couple Clark Gable (Run Silent, Run Deep) and Carole Lombard (Made for Each Other) illuminate the screen in the romantic pre-Code drama No Man of Her Own, their only film together. When New York con man Babe Stewart (Gable) decides to lie low in a small town, he falls for a librarian (Lombard) seeking adventure and a way out of her predictable existence. Gambling on marriage, they head back to the city, where Stewart tries to hide his former life from his new bride. Featuring the scandalous “Lombard on a ladder” scene, which prompted the founding of Hollywood’s League of Decency, No Man of Her Own captures two of the silver screen’s most popular stars at their best. Splendidly directed by Wesley Ruggles (Cimarron) and co-starring Dorothy Mackaill (Kept Husbands).

Doesn't alter your point much, but Criterion has also released Fassbender's Lola from the renewed SC deal.

Don't expect Ran from Criterion in the US. Even the KLI has indicated it's a title that has remained licensed to Lionsgate in the US.

Yeah, don't get me started on Criterion. I love the quality of their releases, but man oh man do they take their time, and with five releases a month, they are going to be a TON of titles that never get a Blu-ray release.

I've been bugging them about HUNTER IN THE DARK for 10 years after I found out they had the license. 10 years and nothing. I spend an entire day just listing the films they have that I would want on Blu-ray.

Personally, I wish they wouldn't acquire so many films if they have no plans on releasing them. Let other labels survive off the films they don't have any plans on doing anything with.

If that's true then that (hopefully) saves me from importing the impending SC UHD.

I just love that Kino always tries to use the original artwork for their bluray covers. And this picture of Carole Lombard in the box set is simply gorgeous! Gotta have this one!

Mr. Insider, are there any Martha Raye titles in the second Universal deal?

It was on the Criterion Channel about a year ago and they even teased it a little while ago. If anything I remember the KLI indicating that Criterion picked it up, but don't quiet remember what they said.

The Carole Lombard set is a thing of beauty! I can finally look at phasing out the old Universal Flipper Disc Lombard set they released years ago. This is a major upgrade for sure and it'll be preordered ASAP. I really got into Lombard after watching her in those films so its great to have an upgrade. Thank you, Kino!
