Yeah I'd wait till a sale. The booklet is a bit of an insult like. There's nothing to it really apart from biographies.

Ordered the tat edition, as I’ve just gone 4k. Part of me doesn’t want to encourage the sales of this disc because it sucks they’ve ignored the international cut but also I’m a Kubrick fiend so what are you going to do? No doubt I’ll be annoyed when they finally release a 4k international version, and no doubt I’ll buy it anyway.

I watched the UHD last night. I'd planned to do so anyway, and then I saw a FB post which proclaimed that it was the film's 40th anniversary. To quote George McFly: "You're my density."
I'm so used to watching the shorter cut that every time I see additional material, my brain is like, 'ERMAGURD, NEW STUFF.' Regardless, I've never been more convinced that the longer cut is the superior one. 1) I think it's important to establish early on both Jack's struggle with alcohol, and the incident which resulted in Danny dislocating his shoulder. It adds a whole other level to the first act of the film, particularly the bit where Danny is trying to sneak past his (supposedly) sleeping father to get his fire truck. I love the scene in which Wendy's telling the doctor about it (meanwhile trying to cotton-wool it as much as she possibly can) and the doctor's just staring blankly at her like, 'GURL, GET OUTTA THERE.' 2) I like the frequency with which Kubrick cuts between the Torrances and Hallorann's efforts to reach them. It's not hard to see why Kubrick chose to cut them from the international cut, but personally I think they contribute greatly to the mounting suspense. 3) P-A-C-I-N-G. More than than not I'm a slut for slow, gradual pacing, and the international cut delivers. The film feels more tense and claustrophobic as a result. Strangely I feel the opposite about Doctor Sleep. Great film, but most of the additional material in the director's cut can just go in the bin, baby. Also, I love that little moment which occurs at the end of the scene in which Jack and Wendy are being shown their shitty living quarters. Their fake-ass smiles fade for a second and they exchange a look as if to say, 'Is this guy serious?' Anyway, I think rewatching the film has made me appreciate the liberties taken with adapting the novel. Don't get me wrong, I'm a King fan and you'll never hear me slag off the book. It's seemingly become popular to hold up the film on a pedestal whilst deriding the source material, branding it a cheap, silly ghost story which Kubrick was able to elevate considerably, but I believe both the film and the novel are terrific in their own rights. That said, Kubrick understood perfectly what was necessary for a visual medium. Could the film have been improved further more by incorporating some of the back story of the book? Possibly, but then the film is 144 mins in its present state, which is already inordinately long for a mainstream horror film. It's no surprise really that King has always derided the film - after all, Jack is obviously a self-insert, and Kubrick's portrayal of the character is much less sympathetic. One of my favourite aspects of the book is the idea that Jack and Wendy are both repeating the mistakes of their parents. That said, if I want to explore the characters further, I'll just pick up the book. You can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs. And when it's evident what the alternative is (the mini-series), well, I know which I prefer. TLDR; this film good 10/10 would watch again. |

Just got done with the 4k myself, and it's only the second time I've seen the US cut (first was when it was released in cinemas in the UK for the first time for whatever other anniversary that was) and I really can't get on board with the extra stuff.
I like that we don't find out about Jack hurting Danny until he's drinking again (or is he?), I think it works better if we don't know how bad he has been until the Overlook unravels him, it seems more inevitable with the heavy handed intro. It also introduces a continuity error as Wendy and Jack both say he was on the wagon for 5 months even though they're more than a month apart. I do agree though that the look the doctor giver her is gold. It does make more sense that we see Dick trying to get to the Overlook, but the pieces are clunky, I could be won over if they were better scenes but as they are I'm glad they're were cut. The skeletons is the worst moment in the film, doesn't fit with anything we've seen, it looks ridiculous, and coming at such a crucial time it's a really bad moment to drop the ball. That said, you just can't ruin this film. Jack's performance remains incredible, and I'd swear 4k brings out even more in his crazy expressions! The detail in this release is beautiful, and it does make the old transfer look bad, so I'll be torn in the future about which version to throw in. Please, please give us the international cut in 4k, even if I have to keep 2 releases on the shelf, I'll happily fork out again to have the actual film I love looking this good. |

To celebrate the 40th anniversary I decided to watch the 4k today.
It looked spectacular so far, until.... damn! Looks like my disc is Jacktorrance'd. It started to freeze circa the 40 min mark, couldnt move thru chapters, not even by using the chapters menu. Then I remembered when I received it a month ago, I tried it for a quick sample of the pic quality, and the main menu did some funny pixelated rainbow stuff at the top. Going to think about a new purchase. Probably the Uk release and try my luck again ![]() Anyway, to celebrate this anti-climatic event, here's the digital code: 765XXJFZU1W7F3P4 edit: code's already taken Last edited by LaughingWindows; 05-25-2020 at 01:26 AM. |

Damn! That 40th anniversary UK box set looks completely useless. I know people complained about the Dawn of the Dead 4K blu-ray box set but this set looks awful. If this also includes the UK cut would anyone really want to watch that version again after they've seen the US cut?
