I took these photos a while ago to try and capture the differences between DV on the OPPO and DV on the Panasonic 820, didn't post them before as THEY'RE MUCH MUCH DARKER THAN THE CONTENT ACTUALLY IS owing to the exposure but what the hell, I'll do it now. The sun in F8 in the Panasonic is a fair bit brighter but it's clearly nowhere near as nuked as how it looks in Vincent's comparison where it's just a giant blob of light rather than a tiny little circle. And because of the camera's exposure having to take into account a brighter highlight then it makes the darker areas look darker in the Panasonic photo, but that's not the case in reality.

Panasonic

OPPO

I’ve been telling people about Vincent’s misleading comparison but noooooo, people just call me a Panasonic shill when I point the same thing out.

FWIW, the Panny's DV implementation is still shitting itself with VERY bright highlights though, like >4000 nits. Chapter 2 of the Montage on Spears & Munsil UHD Benchmark (horsies in the snow) is a joke, totally blown out on the ZD9 while the OPPO is dimmer and still clips slightly but shows far more information.

Not saying that it’s not. But it’s not only Panasonic player. Any player with LLM DV are experiencing that problem with varying degrees.

Which DV profile does the Panasonic use with a 2016 OLED? The OPPO has 2 profiles, one that is tv led, and the other player led. The 2016 OLEDs can not use the player led profile. If the tvs using the LLM DV are having the clipping issues, it may not be a problem with the 2016 OLEDS. I will have to test the S&M disc with that horse scene.

Yes, this is pretty much a low latency issue.

Excuse my ignorance but what is low latency?

Is it the way DV is implemented on certain TVs?

I haven't tried DV on my Panny to LG OLED based on what's been said but now ill give it a try.

With low latency, the player does most of the work with DV processing. On the OPPO, there are 2 profiles. One is tv led in which the tv does most of the processing. The second is player led where the OPPO does most of the processing. If you have a 2016 LG OLED, it can't do low latency, so the tv must do the processing. If LG tv is 2017 or newer, it can do both. With the OPPO, you can chose which DV profile you want to use to see which one works best. With the Panny, apparently it decides which profile will be used with 2017 and newer LG OLEDs. Apparently with my 2016 OLED, i am going to luck out and not be using the low latency profile, which is the one causing all the problems.

To be fair, that scene (>4,000 nits) is intended to be a torture test. I'm also still not sure how to know what's correct/better with all teh different combos of profiles, gear, defeatable DTM, non-defeatable DTM etc. Drives me nuts Especially since I notice pros and cons with different settings now.

Of coursh, but the point of Dobly is to tame stuff like that and the Panasonic LLDV is spectacularly awful at doing so on the ZD9. And yet on Stacey's DV test patterns the same combo of player and TV resolves everything up to 10k nits, apparently the LLDV mode has problems with interpreting the higher level dynamic metadata (whereas the automated L1 metadata on the test patterns is fine).

More detail is present with the player color space set to RGB for DV content only.

Geoff, I know you don't own a Sony player with DV, but do you know if the DV implementation on the Sony players any better than the Panny?

Panasonic has auto HDR10+ and Dolby Vision HDR. Plus only Panasonic and Pioneer offer the tone mapping feature. Sony needs to come out with a firmware update to offer auto Dolby Vision HDR detection feature instead of one needing to manually turn on and off Dolby Vision HDR.

As long as one does not need SACD and DVD-Audio support, the Panasonic Blu-ray players are the best on the market for videophiles.

No idea. I've been tempted to buy an X700 for cheap just to try it out though.

Sorry, I was referring to the DV performance on the Sony.

Played some DV titles last night poking around on some scenes. Paramount titles Top Gun War of the World's Grease.

But without direct side by side I couldn't really know the difference. I'd have to pull a disc out and swap it into my LG player.

I have to rely on the more experienced members here.

So my combo of Panny and 2017 LG OLED would be the LLDV delivery type?

So I’m not sure this is the correct thread for this question but if it is please help. So when I first got my 820 I paired it with my Marantz 5013 and LGC9. I watched a couple films and notices the video would drop and screen would go black for a second or two them come back. Audio never dropped. This drove me crazy and thought something was wrong with the player so I switched it out and got a new one. Same thing happened. I said okay maybe it’s an hdmi issue. Switched them and it fixed the problem no issues. At first I thought maybe I had faulty 4k disc but noticed it was happening when I played blurays as well. Long story short It’s about a year later and it just happened again with days of thunder 4k. Mind you I’m saying to myself not again... I stopped the movie and wiped it with a cloth and it didn’t drop anymore. Question this time around is maybe it’s the av unit? I notice it happens a lot in the past playing dv titles with a sprinkle of others as well. I really don’t want to start pulling wires out the wall again. The way I have my setup is hdmi to tv to av and another hdmi from 4k to av. Has this happened to anyone before? I’m so annoyed, really thought I was past this issue

LOL. “Everybody” don’t have HDMI tester like professionals do. Many cables are okay with 4K/24 HDR10 but enough of them can do 4K/24 DV and/or 4K/60.

Better doesn’t always mean more expensive. I’ve tested boutique brand that cost $400 that’s worse than $20 HDMI cable.
