Criterion this year is going to release multiple movies that are available in 4k from Netflix. They’re also releasing Parasite, a movie that will be getting a 4k release from the studio. This release will be cheaper than the Criterion. In recent years they’ve also gotten beaten by releases in other markets, including the Don’t Look Now 4k.

I kinda hope they don't release Chronicles on UHD, simply because the completist in me would probably pick it up as a companion piece and I think it sucks.

Missed the boat completely with a BD only release of Roma. I'd have picked up the UHD disc in a heartbeat but why spend extra when the 4k version is on my Netflix already. Shocking lax attitude.

My impression is that Criterion are more or less in the process of abandoning their legacy as the pioneers of technically-minded quality home video releases in favor of riding on their brand name and latching onto the social media-filmtwitter-hashtag-streamosphere. Which is no doubt a sound business decision and great for people who want to watch obscure movies, less great for people who want to see them in deserving quality.

People crap their pants when something gets picked up by Criterion, but often it doesn't seem to be for the potential quality or contents of the actual disc, just for the fact that it's Criterion. At this point the Netflix stuff especially is borderline merch in my opinion.

Good call — there's no way the actual UHD discs would trump the streaming versions.

I suspect part of the issue is that whilst there have been other indie UHD releases there not really feeling the pressure yet. Those releases have tended to be genre films and with UHD as a whole its really only SC who are putting out stuff like The Elephant Man which might be considered more Criterion territory.

If we see more of a large scale shift towards Criterions core business, especially other labels getting UHD rights to Criterion releases then they might finally be forced to make the jump. With region coding becoming less of an issue as well it might not even need US releases.

It might. My point was I have a 4k/HDR version now, albeit a streamed version. Why spend money on a 1080p/SDR version? I would spend money on a UHD disc.

Excellent points, as when an indie gets that big and that prestigious then they ain't gonna go chasing anything because they don't need to, they can just rest on them thar laurels. Case in point:

I'm not interested in this title, but excited none the less to see that UHD BD door opening at Arrow.

Agreed. The fetishization of Criterion is absolutely cringy.

It is far from a pretty movie, I love the look but it's filtertown

Would love an eventual 4K UHD release of Event Horizon and Resident Evil, I really like those two Paul WS Anderson films. Hell, even Mortal Kombat on 4K would be awesome. Never understood the hate for the man.
