Here is the most recent update claiming that most stores have reopened:

Just back from two local B&N. A bit eerie, with the cafes mothballed and the magazines on the racks all out of date.

I asked in both about the sale and was told the same: By now, they would normally have advance notice of promotional events (any product) for the following month; there is no indication the Criterion sale will take place; things are changing rapidly as they adjust to being open again, so check back.

From one Vivien Leigh movie to another... Really hoping to see a Blu Ray for That Hamilton Woman! I know I must sound like a broken record, but it's the only one in my Top 10 without a Blu Ray (The Song of Bernadette's Blu Ray is rare and good prices hard to come by, but it's out there and I got it mostly cheap) and I'd love for all 10 to be in HD! ...And I want some uniformity on my shelf with the sizes of the cases.

Thanks. When I first heard the podcast I recall thinking that Lee Kline's remarks were more general than what the original poster had suggested, but I didn't recall what part of the audio had the comment. After Jafar gave me the timestamp, I went back and heard that bit again. It's a speculative remark that they've been thinking of doing a Bollywood box (and I think here Bollywood is incorrectly used as a term for all of Indian cinema and not just the Bombay/Hindi film industry), and how everyone has their own list of 10 films they'd like to see in a box. So as of now, it doesn't even look like they have a fixed list, let alone any question of ascertaining the rights and acquiring the source elements. We're talking about something that's likely at least several years ahead.

Anyway, I took out that bit of the audio and uploaded it here - Lee Kline - Indian cinema.mp3, so anyone here can check it out for themselves. Unless your interest is solely in this part I'd actually suggest you hear the whole podcast because he has a lot of interesting stories to tell, including how they restored the Apu Trilogy and how it is to work with film-makers and film companies on various projects.

It is interesting to hear his admission that they screwed up the color grading on their Le Cercle Rouge release. There has speculation that was the case since the original Criterion DVD was released many years ago.

I haven't had the chance to see it yet since I don't have enough time during the day. But I'll be excited to watch this tonight

I can see Criterion putting Da 5 Bloods into their collection but I don't see it getting a release anytime soon (Probably one year wait at minimum like the other two Netflix Films released)

I'm hoping the B&N sale happens. I look forward to them every year, and having the B&N membership gives me a much better deal than Criterion's own flash sale.

Same here. Just like the whole in store shopping experience of pulling them off the shelf and then trying to choose what to keep and what to put back.

Now that is an upgrade I'm surprised hasn't happened yet. The BFI blu-ray set came out five years ago. I got tired of waiting, and threw it into an order I placed with BFI a couple of weeks ago.

I’ve never preordered direct from Criterion before until they announced Come and See. Do they typically ship right around the street date or do they tend to mail orders early? Thanks

Even if the 50% off sale does happen at B&N, I think everyone need to realize that most Criterion titles will be out of stock (especially the newer titles) because their warehouses have not been able to send new supplies. So what would be the point?

(1) I don't know about your local B&Ns, but mine have a large quantity of older releases that I still don't have. So there's those.

(2) One can still order any title on-line as part of the sale. You might not get them for a while, but you should be able to order them, even if they're recent releases.

Me, I'm OK if the sale gets pushed back a bit. I'm exhausted from way too many sales over the past couple of months.

If they've been talking to Indian filmmakers and getting recommendations as to which films they should be adding to a Bollywood boxset, then it's not a stretch to say that they are planning on releasing one.

I wondered that too, but after stopping in I can say that my local Barnes and Noble has good stock on both old and new releases in their store. In fact, they had every new release that I'm hoping to pick up in July if the sale goes forward. The Great Escape, Destry Rides Again, Grand Budapest Hotel, Eric Rohmer's Six Moral Tales to name a few.

The point would be the same as it is for any sale: to generate revenue and to move product. I can’t speak for everyone, but if the number of sale opportunities is reduced, my spend on their product will be reduced as well. I hope that’s not the case, but that’s the way it is.

Would be great to see the sale happen, if only for some semblance of "normality" after the past three months of lockdown.

I hear you. I've bought quite a few films recently across various other sales, and my unwatched pile has never been bigger. I'd love to pick up The Great Escape, Leave Her to Heaven, and The War of the Worlds at the very least if possible, but I can wait.

I used to be a member but switched mostly to the Flash Sales as I found that other than the odd magazine, I wasn't really buying anything else to justify membership. And getting a $50 gift certificate from Criterion after spending $500 is a pretty good deal. The best thing about the B&N events is their length, and I still pick up a few titles each time.
