Is the Criterion channel really doing that well, that they stopped being concerned with that their disc sales and being competitive with other boutique labels?

Because my impression is that they're struggling with the streaming and that discs are still their cash cow.

The boutiques that've experimented with Ultra HD Blu-ray aren't really the competition, though. Sure, Shout Select's The Deer Hunter is in that vein. Studiocanal is obviously not a boutique, but still, Don't Look Now and The Elephant Man are in Criterion's ballpark as well. But Flash Gordon, Pitch Black, Zombie, The New York Ripper, Space Adventure Cobra, Suspiria, Tammy and the T-Rex, Hannibal...? Criterion might even point to the dearth of arthouse, drama, classic films, etc. as proof that the market isn't there for the types of films they tend to release. And nearly all of the boutiques that have released titles only have one or two discs out at present, and most haven't announced any followup releases. Sure, sure, some of them have dipped their toes in so recently that there hasn't been time to announce more, but still, it's easy to look at the state of things and think "it's not time yet". I don't agree with it, but I do kind of get it.

To be clear, I am frustrated that Criterion isn't diving in. Just over the next month or so, War of the Worlds, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Marriage Story, and the Bruce Lee box seem like such obvious candidates for UHD releases. (And I personally would've bought The Lady Eve on top of that, but I get that it's less marketable for UHD BD than the others would've been.) But until something lights a fire -- more apples-to-apples competition, sales starting to slip, directors fussy about their films not being presented in 4K/HDR -- I suspect Criterion is going to remain complacent. They'll explore UHD BD because they have to, not because they want to.

I've no idea, but that's all they seem to advertise at the moment. If the discs are still the cash cow then that also answers the question. They're not going to fragment their market any further than they have to.

I made the mistake of pre-purchasing this on Diabolik, not knowing it was not going to be an exclusive. Oh well

I made the mistake of only skim reading their 42 paragraph policies page. I will only ever order from them again if they have an item in stock and at a great price. Their policies have really turned me off from wanting to ever do business with them again. I get they're a small business but I know tons of small local businesses that have no problem with refunds on a pre-order months in advance.

Been saying that Diabolik is trash with regards to their policies, I don't give a crap that it's run by two guys. That's not my fault. Are these guys going to pay my bills? Amazon or any other company with a generous policy is the only place to go. But hey, I see some folks that like to pay more and that's definitely their right. But unless you're rich or have money to burn, seeing that Amazon price compared to Diabolik stings like hell.

Stuff like this has to affect their business long term. I've ordered several titles from them but will seriously look elsewhere in the future, especially for pre-orders.

Totally right. I wish I would've done more research or simply asked in this forum if it was/wasn't exclusive to Diabolik. Oh well, live and learn.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll cancel my Amazon and switch to BestBuy in store pick up. That way I can take a look at its condition first (as opposed to getting one from Amazon that may look like it's been run over by a bus).

I'm very tempted to email them and point out they are getting terrible publicity here and on other sites over both pitch black and flash gordon. Of course I'd probably get a "we don't care" reply.

This is exactly why people should be extremely careful who they decide to shop from, and give their credit/debit card number to (especially online). From now on do extensive research , read customer reviews and check the BBB ( the Better Business Bureau)on the retailer. before purchasing anything. I don't give my personal information and bank account numbers to anybody on the internet. I only buy from well known, trusted and reputable merchants. This is how people get scammed, you can't trust everybody, you have to use common sense! Even their name sound shady to me, and I wouldn't buy a pack of gum from them. All the red flags are there but people ignore them because they want to get a bargain. Sometimes all that glitter is not gold. I'm very cautious and wise when it comes to my money.

Yes, but if you look at what other members of bluray.com have in the past said about Diabolik you will find page after page of glowing recommendations. This is also why I used PayPal, yes they have my address but no credit/debit info. I would never use a debt card online, credit cards have fraud protection and can easily be frozen and the number changed anymore. It's not that Diabolik is a scam, they are just a small business that has some of the worst policies regarding canceling or price changes I have seen in a very long time. I've been around long enough to remember when Amazon was a little unknown Seattle company that only sold books and at the time I remember people saying the same thing about "are they legit". When I moved to Seattle in the mid 80s Amazon hadn't even been founded yet.
