There is no depth adjustment on the TK800 or the HT3550. I just bought a Sony S6700 Blu-ray player which does have it to see if makes a difference with titles that have mostly mild 3D. The adjustment is -2, -1, 0, +1, +2. I set it for +2 and it did make a difference watching Predator. At 2:25 the helicopter does come out of the screen maybe mild pop-out. At 2:40 the part of the helicopter in front of Arnold pops-out maybe closer to medium. These are not mentioned in Damon's review so, I guess it does make a difference.

Thanks for pointing it out, I'll go back and give those spots another look and check my player for strength adjustments. Sometimes I miss pop-outs.

I don't think you missed anything. I was just saying that if you increase the depth adjustment (if you have one on your display or Blu-ray player), scenes that had none or mild pop-out, now are mild and medium.

Default Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For

Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For

100 Pop-outs counted! Some of these are very creative as well. Included for your viewing pleasure are three frame breaks (FB in my strength-O-Meter)

You can't go wrong using this to show off your 3D rig. It's even in colour, sort of!

Also this movie gets points for creativity and clarity. For instance, there is a scene early on where Marv stands a bit outside of the screen while a car, in a completely different scale, circles him. Another scene, Ava is diving into a pool but we see her from the side horizontally and when she hits the plane of the water, the ripples pop out vertically. It looks really nice.

After watching it, I'm kind of surprised this movie doesn't get mentioned more often when the conversation veers towards pop-outs!

Default Dial M for Murder 3D

Not a lot going on here. There are a few very mild pop-outs I didn't bother with, but there are three very clear and strong ones that are nice. If you like titles, those are strong, as well as the intermission text. However, I don't count titles. Good movie, though, and Grace Kelly is dreamy .

I can't remember, did that green table lamp shift into negative parallax at all? It spent half of the film on screen, so it deserved a moment of extreme flamboyance. And, that arm at 44.04 - one of 3D cinema's most powerfully emotional pop-outs I think.

I'd have to look again. There were some flowers that bulged out a tiny bit in the bottom right corner early in the film and something else a little later in the bottom left but it was so slight it didn't reach my definition of mild. I guess the lack of noticeable pop-out did help make the outstretched arm more startling. I thought the hand holding the key was a strange choice for a pop-out.

That shot with the key almost seemed like they felt they had to "throw another one in." When I started reading about the 50s 3D films as a kid in the 80s Dial M came across as having legendary status as the most masterful use of 3D: I really don't see that myself. I mean, it's a great film with perfectly good 3D but I don't think it stands above the other Golden Age classics.

I agree. I think sometimes critics are unable to separate "good movie" from "good 3D". And while there is nothing wrong with the 3D, it gets a boost from being a good movie as well. You might be inclined to think it also gets a boost from being a serious drama with a little director worship thrown in as well. I do wish more movies like this, Inferno, and Miss Sadie Thompson for examples would receive the 3D treatment. Today it's pretty much cartoons, super heroes, and space wizards.

I never noticed this before but at 44:30 the killers head, shoulders, arms and the scissors pop out of the screen when he falls to the ground. His head is more than halfway out into my home theatre room. It's only for about three seconds so it's easy to miss.

I'm watching this on a 130 inch screen from 12 feet away. What's amazing about this 3D is that it makes me feel I am in the room with them.

You're right! I don't know how I missed it. I was probably writing down Grace Kelly's pop-out. His fall ended with his head sticking out a high medium, almost strong but not as strong as her arm reaching back. Yes it is easy to miss probably because most of the screen is dark at that point. I kept my eye on the green table lamp but didn't catch it on my side of screen but I did notice the little blue box on the table bulges out of the screen a bit when he is in the process of blackmailing the killer.
I will have to update my list a little later this weekend. Thanks!

Edit: Also the Newspaper his wife is reading at the beginning pops out mildly.
Edit, edit: updated entry

Default Gog

Another vintage title, another pop-out fest. Gog pops into my top 5, at least for now. This is a good old science fiction flick which finds our hero investigating the mysterious deaths of personnel on a top secret scientific research facility.

Default Conan (2011)

Conan (Jason Momoa)

Not impressed. There were a few half-hearted attempts at some environmental negative parallax but a huge number of missed opportunities in a sword-and sorcery movie that should be stuffed with them. Since I found 17, I won't put it in the "don't bother" list but...don't bother.

Default Dark Country

Thomas Jane and Lauren German star in this mystery thriller. I had a bit of trouble with this one as the region B part of my player crapped out on me about half way through. I was able to complete this with an anaglyph DVD version. This was the French version that has forced French subtitles if you watch it with English audio. I just watched it in French. There is also a Turkish version somewhere that eliminates that problem. Happy hunting.

The 3D in this is quite strong and it has a number of pop-outs. I'll admit I didn't note several because they are basically the same pop-out that was interrupted temporarily by a camera change, or our couple moving in and out of the negative space in the same scene. As has been mentioned by too many to count it is essentially a long Twilight Zone episode so rewatch value is maybe low YMMV. It is also apparently Thomas Jane's directorial debut.

A fun monster smash up film with some pretty good pop-outs. Based on the video game of the same name and starring Dwayne Johnson. Don't really have much to say about it other than it is re-watchable fun.

Default Taza, Son of Cochise

Here's my first vintage entry (aside from Dial M) that is really lackluster on the pop-outs. Sure there are some strong ones but all but a couple are framed very poorly. The non-pc storyline also makes it hard to recommend as a demo for younger folks despite the fact that the 3D is otherwise good and the restoration very good. For us old folks, watch anytime with a bucket of popcorn (provided you still have teeth)

Default Ant-Man

Another winner, this time from Marvel. A load of good pop-outs and just a fun all around movie. While some bemoan the overly humorous nature of the Marvel films, particularly the post Guardian of the Galaxy entries inclusive, it fits this film very well and I had a good laugh at some of the antics. This movie also offers some good depth effects so it should satisfy most everyone on the 3D aspect. Pretty soon I'm going to have to find some lame movies to balance out this list!
