Default The Last Airbender Review Thread (Spoilers)

Synopsis:
Quote:
In a world where the elements, Water, Earth, Fire, and Air can be controlled by people known as "benders", the Fire Nation is waging a ruthless war to control the other great nations. The only hope for stopping the war rests on the shoulders of a young boy named Aang (Noah Ringer). The last known Airbender and survivor of the peaceful Air Nomads, Aang is the Avatar. The Avatar is the physical embodiment of the world, with the ability to control all four elements and draw upon the combined power, knowledge, and experience of the Avatar's previous incarnations. The Avatar's duty is to maintain peace between the four nations and the spirit realm, ensuring that the world remains in balance, despite the Fire Nation's war. Aided by a protective teenage Waterbender named Katara (Nicola Peltz) and her warrior brother Sokka (Jackson Rathbone), and his forever loyal Sky Bison Appa, Aang begins a perilous journey to restore balance to their war-torn world.

I haven't seen a Shyamalan movie since Lady in the Water, avoided the Happening, doubt I would see this. Shymalan seems to be the true definition of a one and done director.

I'm in. Still hoping he makes a comeback. Anybody know of the animated series? What's it about?

I really like the cartoon series, so I'll probably see the film. But so help me, if there is even ONE plant that tries to kill people...

True, but I still like to see his movies just to see how bad he can get. Rental at best.

It's about Aang, the sole survivor of his temple, who wakes up 100 years later to find the world is dominated by the evil Fire Nation. Aang is the latest reincarnation of the guardians of the world but he needs to master all the martial arts skills (Air, Water, Earth and Fire) before he can bring peace.

Strangely, the last time I spoke to the distributor that will be releasing this movie, she said that they changed major stuff for this movie. She said this when she defended Hollywood's way of screwing with the original like they did with Dragonball.

I'll be watching this closely since the outcome of this movie may have an impact on a project I'm involved in.

Shouldn't this be like a fantasy wuxia type period piece? They should have gotten Ang Lee.

It can't be a period piece since it's total fantasy. The creatures alone are fantastical. Of course, I'm talking about the cartoon series.

I think Ang Lee would not have chosen this one. Not his style.

I don't know about the movie but the cartoon series was multilayered and complex for a half-hour show. It was well done. Strangely enough, it was only mastered in SD 4:3 even though they used paper to draw most of the animation.

1) M Night is not writing the script he is just directing
2) It has a big following .. and M Night still is a big name in Hollywood so I think the risk is rather low. Besides the Happening made plenty of money..

My concern is it being a trilogy. And the other is I hope M doesn't put himself in the film as a lead or a secondary.
M's films have gone downhill from the first. Sixth Sense was good, still enjoyed Stir of Echoes more, Unbreakable was good for what it was. Signs was alright, The Village was predictable and I figured it out well before the end. Lady was just awful, and will never watch that movie again, and The Happening was just as bad if not worst than Lady.
M has the directing ability if his ego doesn't get the best of him. The nice thing with this new movie he's working on is the cinematographer from the Lord of The Rings trilogy is helping him.
If this movie isn't a box office success for him, I think we'll be seeing alot less of him, his budgets will be cut, or his stuff will go straight to dvd/BD.

It's pretty good. About a kid in a world where people can learn to control the elements through "bending". Most people can only handle a single element, but this kid can bend fire, earth, air, and water. The story follows him and his friends as he learns to bend so that he can defeat the Fire Nation and restore peace to the world.

Don't know if it'll translate to live action well, but it works well for an animated show. Let's just hope they don't put him in high school, eh?

The cartoon IS great, my 50 year old father watches it all the time. (seriously)

I am kind of upset that he cast the 4 main leads as caucasian, can't see alot of fans going along with that.

Only one film of his flopped (that bieng Lady in the water), the rest wheree hugely sucesfull from memory. The studio's don't care about the quality if the film if they constantly make alot of money.

I'm just wondering when it will be set. Will this be the "Air" book (4th)? Will it be set somewhere in between Water, Earth and Fire? Will it be set before Water? I just don't see how they can tie it in between what's already happened, or how they can do something after the series finale. The series got tied up pretty well because it was planned to be a short run to begin with.

I hope the script was written by the original authors of the show, it was such a great show. I watched it since the beginning and it's one of those that's just ageless. It didn't matter how young or old you were it sucked you in. It had the younger leads so it got children's attention, but it was so well written it kept adult's attention.
