Forgotten that. Almostly certainly that use of 'homophobic' language would get it rated 12. Language is actually the thing that worries parents the most in the BBFC consumer research. Hence why the BBFC are so strict on it. Much more than violence or sex & nudity.

They call each other 'fag' in Excellent Adventure and it got through unscathed as a PG (see further above).

That was the word I was talking about when I substituted it for a 'bundle of sticks', the word was used in Excellent Adventure and it was resubmitted to the BBFC to which they classified it again as a PG. Sometimes they turn a blind eye to certain controversial out-dated "attitudes" on historical grounds. I'm not personally offended by the term but I'm not your average Twitter user, so...

Don't be stupid, Spock isn't real.

Can't believe I still have to explain this to people!

Ridiculous isn't it? The BBFC re-rate movies and TV shows based on what is seen as offensive today. Bogus Journey obviously has more disrespectful and mean spirited attitude. However I do hope it remains a PG.

The research the BBFC does seems to focus a lot on interviewing parents with teenage children. They always seen to state in the interviews they don't want their children coming home swearing repeating stuff they heard at school or on TV or film.

Surely children have been doing that for decades already, i bet those very parents did it when they were young.

Teenage children? I swore like a trooper when I was 14 back in the 80s.
They need to see what primary school age kids are saying in the playground. A friend of ours who's a primary school teacher got told to f-off by a 5 year old

It's kind of absurd that parents are worried about the content that TV and film studios are putting out when the teenagers themselves are watching stuff that's too strong for an R18 certificate on their phones and tablets.

Just ask people like Ken Loach where there films get an 18 because they feature 'real life' so kids swearing like troopers and using the 'c-word' which gets pretty much an automatic 18 rating when used in a sexually threatening context.

Parents don't seem to care though about violence and sex & nudity hence less restrictions on superhero films (as they are considered by the BBFC 'fantasy' not real life).

Not a parent myself but would agree with you that parents and the BBFC have got their rating and censorship priorities the wrong way round. I would personally rate harder for violence.

one of my few memories of primary school is a group of children being told off for using the word ‘dipstick’ because it was a swearword

also, in the era of Flash games in the mid-00s, I was told off for playing a game called ‘Spanking the Monkey’ where you... spank a monkey, and I had no idea there was any innuendo in that turn of phrase, I thought it was just an animated monkey

who doesn’t swear as a teenager?

Do they call each other 'fag' in Bogus Journey?

Have I forgotten that?

When I was a teaching assistant, we had less issues with kids saying f-off and more with them using "f-ing good" as a genuine complement!

You used to hear the word 'bit*h' in PG movies. Now that gets you a '12'. Same certificate as seven 'f*cks' (which according to the BBFC annual report they allowed in one film last year).

Geez, I could've sworn it was only an Excellent Adventure thing.

The evil robots using the term I can excuse..they're evil, but yeah it's a bit of a stain on two otherwise positive characters.

Be excellent to each other, unless you're a fag.

I know people moan about political correctness, but this sentiment is so out of place in what otherwise are really fun, positive films. It's not dated well

Not sure tbh, although Monty Python's Life of Brian was re-rated 12A for its cinema re-release last year despite containing 6 f-words as well as some fairly risque sex references. Quite a strong 12 let alone 12A!

Plus full frontal male nudity, although in a non-sexual setting.
