James Cameron: ”I’m looking forward to seeing movies on one of these great displays, in my home starting this year"
https://www.dolby.com/us/en/technologies/dolby-3d.html
He said this in a recent interview, talking about the new Dolby (glasses-free) 3D.
Is it possible that Titanic will finally be released in 4K (as well as in Dobly 3D Blu-ray) later this year?

Isn't that video/website several years old?

The planned glasses-free version of it hasn't been seen in several years. Philips briefly offered a single professional 4K display that had the tech and I think it was pulled off the market or cancelled entirely before it shipped because it was built on an older design that wasn't comparable to other pro offerings built on current hardware, so it needed to be revised and a successor has not materialized.

Nice. Didn't realize that it played in cinemas with Dolby Vision, but the fact that it's had a DV pass is probably a good sign. The question is, will they release it on disc or will it be digital only?

I'm still waiting for It's a Wonderful Life (1946) and War of The Worlds (1953) to show up on 4K UHD, but Paramount has only released those restorations in Digital 4K thus far.

I never got to see the DV limited release last year (I believe it was showing exclusively at AMC theaters and I don’t have any in my area) but I thought it was a sure thing we’d get a 4k release very soon. Still waiting though.

The UK and US agree to a 'momentous' deal to protect the sunken wreck of the Titanic

The wreck of the Titanic will be protected for the first time following a 'momentous' treaty which will restrict exploration of the sunken vessel's decaying hull. The agreement between the UK and the US will give both the power to grant or deny licences to enter the remains and to remove artifacts found outside the hull. UK Maritime Minister Nusrat Ghani said the treaty will ensure the historic wreck is treated with the 'sensitivity and respect' the Titanic and her passengers deserve — this includes a carefully executed plan to 'surgically remove' a roof to get to the radio that gave out the Titanic's final distress signal.

Cameron is too busy with his Avatar sequels, that he's not thinking about anything else right now, but one monkey doesn't stop a show. There plenty of other 4K movies that we'll can watch and enjoy in the meantime. I don't worry about Cameron because, he wants people to kiss his behind and I'm going to do it. He's not the only movie director in the world who've made good movies. True Lies and The Abyss Blu-ray releases??? He could've release those movies on Blu-ray years ago in he wanted to.... Damn it if he do, and damn it if he don't!

I know I'm super late on this, but in all fairness, if all 3d movies were made with the technical quality of the first Avatar movie instead of just remastered blur-fests with plenty of post production fake DoF, 3D cinema would be the greatest thing in the world.

I agree the reason 3D failed is because Cameron really did 3D so right that no one else could measure up!

Then you got the 3D post conversion wave that started killed it in 2010 and 2011. They say it's the glasses but really it's because the content wasn't on Avatar level after that came and went and second rate content was all we had to sustain the format.

===========

Anyway. I really love Titanic, more than I like to admit sometimes... I said nearly two years ago I was cool waiting, but that is starting to turn to a longing to have a fresh scanned UHD from the OCN... Am part of a community that has done a 4K in HDR using the SDR blu-ray source. I feel a native 4K source could be better, the grade wasn't as transformative as others; and it's Paramount so I'm looking forward to seeing the UHD disc output. It will be mine!

Has there been any update on this? Titanic is my favourite movie of all time so having it on 4k bluray would be an excellent upgrade

Titanic being Fox in EU doesn't help. But in this case Cameron is the issue for sure.

No 4K UHD HDR exists for the film yet, this is the same situation as with True Lies and The Abyss, requires talent involvement and approval to get a release. Like Braveheart, this is a situation where the cost would be split between Paramount and Fox but in this case, Disney seeing Fox is no more. If Disney doesn't deem the film viable for their international markets, they wont bother.

If I wanted a specific movie to be released on Blu-ray, I would pretend to be an insider and say that a studio is considering said film for release, get people hyped for it and begging the studio, thus creating something like a self-fulfilling prophecy...

In theory, there might not be a dedicated HDR pass... On top of that, was the Dolby Vision done for the properly framed 2.35 version of the film or the compromised 1.78 version which was created for the 3D conversion...

as much as I want this in 4K we are so lucky to have the BD look as good as it does even with it's alterations/tinkering.

Why wouldn’t there be a HDR pass if it was graded in Dolby Vision? Do you mean no HDR10 pass?

And given it was 3D Dolby Vision, it would almost certainly be the open matte version.

James Cameron probably wants UHD 3D on home video before dropping Titanic.
