You have to remember Sony did this to recoup cost from a lost theatrical run and $70 million barely covers the production costs... Not sure what had been spent on marketing before being sold to Apple.

The budget was apparently $50 million. So they paid more to cover other expenses (and surely Tom Hanks' bonus).

But if you have to double the budget to break even, then $70 million doesn't even begin to cover it.

Double is when you split the box office dollars with the exhibitors.
If you get $70M from Apple, you got the full $70M.

But you still have to double for marketing costs and what not, right? Cause if we're just doubling for splitting the box office with exhibitors than $100 million wouldn't even do anything. You would probably need at least $200 million to break even. Though I may have my math wrong.

Sony wouldn't sell it to Apple for a loss. That $70 million would be the amount they needed to offload the movie "at cost" to avoid losing money at the box office by it not reaching $200 million. The movie was 3 months away when Covid hit so they couldn't have spent that much on marketing.
