Not gonna lie, whenever a massive company denies a rumour, I just assume that the rumour was correct.

Well as they say the proof will be in the pudding! If they do release fox and other Catalogue titles on 4k UHD Disc, then the story is false. If on the other hand...........?

It's pretty ambiguous, leaves them a lot of wiggle room. But it's better than nothing.

I imagine a follow up statement will be issued soon for clarity.

my guess is that they'll throw us a bone or two in the months ahead....

but going forward it will in no way be a priority for them...

Disney's priority list is pretty short (working within the confines of the pandemic)
  • Continue to expand the Disney+ explosive growth
  • Get Star ready for it's debut next year.

It never was a priority for them.

They will release a few titles like the Pirates movies and maybe Roger Rabbit or some other animated titles but you aren’t going to get movies like Speed, the Die Hards, The Rock, Crimson Tide, The Sixth SenE or the vast majority of the Fox/Touchstone catalog on 4K. Might as well accept it

I sold my Die hards years ago expecting better transfers and such... Nothing yet. Same with Lethal Weapon (WB) and Pirates of the Caribbean .

Of course, that initial report came from Digital Bits.

On a side note D+ seems to show you potential 4K releases when something comes out as 4K streaming like the National Treasure, National Treasure 2 pair, Remember the Titans is another. None of those have 4K placeholders on blu-ray.com yet.

Good grief, why is everybody so cynical? Did Mickey Mouse come to your home and give your cat rabies?

Read the response again. They don't say the word 'catalogue' once.

It was never in doubt that they're committed to the format - but for new release titles only, or so the insider rumour mill goes.

At any rate, I won't believe it until I see some live action title comes out in 2021. The proof is always in the pudding.

Yeah, he actually did. Little rat owes me $800 for the vet bill.

For what it's worth, Jeffrey Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere posted about the Digital Bits article over the weekend and had this unattributed quote from someone he talked to:

Quote:
Connected Industry Guy to HE: “I wouldn’t be too concerned about this. I’d bet they’ve yet to fully evaluate the situation. They have a superb exec in Schawn Belston, who is quite able to lead them to proper potential 4K IP in the Fox library. There’s very little in the Disney library that’s actually 4K fodder. Most of the Fox IP that would be interesting is large format, so low in numbers. The situation needs to jell a bit.”
Which sounds like an fair read on the situation (though I'd argue against the idea that only large format stuff warrants 4K). Maybe Disney is apathetic or slow to get these things going, but they'll get around to taking a look if money's to be made. If anything, maybe the Bits piece has shown them there's interest in 4K disc. Disney's own statement isn't really saying anything more than "4K discs? It depends, maybe".
