So it’d be Bloodsport Cyborg Kickboxer Lionheart etc etc, the majority of his early movies are good so there’s no need to jump around his filmography. |

I'm with everyone else in choosing "Bloodsport" as the kickoff point. After that I'd hit "Kickboxer" and "Double Impact". If you're hooked by then (a good bet), proceed to the two big budget sci-fi epics that put Van Damme on the mainstream map, "Universal Soldier" and "Timecop". I still find them as much fun as ever. "Sudden Death" from '95 is also essential. People seem to be pretty divided on his late 90's stuff. But I've got nothing but love for "Double Team" (with Mickey Rourke and Dennis Rodman). And (though I guess it's a minority opinion) I'm a huge fan of Van Damme's Foreign Legion adventure "Legionnaire". That's about the time the man's films started going direct to video in North America. His output is prolific from then on and the quality of the movies is variable. But I find the star himself is always watchable and often riveting. For example, "Until Death"(2007) has its faults. But Van Damme's performance in it is among his very best. And his turn as a villain in "Enemies Closer"(2013) is nothing short of fantastic. Among the post-2000 films, "Replicant'(2001) and "Pound of Flesh"(2015) are both don't miss items. And - of course - Van Damme's soulful work in "JCVD"(2008) attracted a good deal of Oscar buzz at the time. Something that doesn't happen too often with action stars. And that buzz was well deserved.

"Hard Target"'s definitely strong on action but somehow the movie as a whole never really struck a chord with me. Ditto the well regarded "Maximum Risk". Which isn't to say I dislike them. Bought them both without hesitation on DVD, then Blu-ray. They're just not personal favorites.

I hold Death Warrant in pretty high regard as well. Makes my top 5 at any rate.

I've always felt his films with HK Action Directors were really in a league of their own.

Always glad Van Damme was able to connect with some top drawer Hong Kong directors. I continue to think of "Double Team" and "Knock Off" as a pair. "Double Team"'s a solid full steam ahead adventure, lavishly produced; "Knock-Off"'s its crazy, slightly disreputable and merrily unpredictable cousin. A genuine fly by the seat of your pants experience. Both movies are marvelous rides though. Excitingly photographed. "Replicant"'s done on a much smaller scale. But it's a high quality item. Fine script (although i probably would have tinkered a bit with the ending) but JCVD's beautiful performance is perfection.
