Since we are in the middle of down period for new releases on disc, I need to share that if you want to be pleasantly surprised by a well done lower budget war movie, I would highly recommend The Outpost. Solid movie based on a true story that definitely puts you in the middle of the action. If you want to test what your system can do, pop this one in and hang on. One of the better sounding war movies (without tanks) that I have heard.

Speaking of that down time, I have been pleasantly surprised by how easy I have built up my films this year. I thought it was going to be a struggle but the opposite is true. I do things differently to other people and I buy all my films in December for the following year (normally 65) so I have a Blu-ray to watch every week on movie night plus several over Christmas. It’s worked out well this year except for the fact I have bought films throughout the year incase they go OOP as many are collector editions, limited edition back catalogue or speciality label releases. For example, I’m only now getting around to watching John Wick 3 THIS YEAR! (I avoid all spoilers) so titles like Parasite, The Invisible Man, 1917, The Lighthouse, Terminator ![]() The ones I’m most excited to watch are ‘Come And See’ (favourite of mine), The Painted Bird, The Woman In Black tv adaptation, Carnival Of Souls, It Couldn’t Happen Here (Pet Shop Boys), Invisible Man, 1917, The Lighthouse, Parasite, Under The Shadow, Texas Chainsaw 2, Zombie Flesh Eaters, Arctic, etc.. Bottom line, the titles just keep coming and I have already acquired 65 titles to watch next year plus a dozen special interest. That’s a mixture of 4K, Blu-ray and 1 DVD. |

When this was done, many on forums rightly stated that SVOD has nothing to do with physical media. If you add SVOD you might as well add Pay-TV. They are lemons and limes as opposed to lemons and bricks (PM) The DEG saw the handwriting on the wall: if you don't include SVOD you will have nothing to report on as the physical market peaked then began it long slide downward. The numbers really haven't changed. It was $25 billion back in 2005. It's still $25 billion. All that happened is the money shifted line items on the reports. |

My problem is Home Entertainment spend, DEG, NPD and the media makes it look like the total spend is like the chart above which is very misleading. |

The Digital Entertainment Group link below only goes back as far as 2011, but total home entertainment spending for each year was as follows: 2011: $18.041 billion 2012: $18.000 billion 2013: $18.220 billion 2014: $17.805 billion 2015: $18.073 billion 2016: $18.280 billion 2017: $20.494 billion 2018: $23.279 billion 2019: $25.167 billion 2020 as of mid year: $15.104 billion Based upon the above figures, I am skeptical that 2005 brought in $25 billion; that figure was not achieved until last year. https://www.degonline.org/industry-data/ According to this source, 2005 saw $21.7 billion in total home entertainment spending (minus rental): https://www.widescreenreview.com/blog_detail.php?id=422 Not one year from 1999 to 2009 got above $21.8 billion. ![]() $24.5 billion is NOT $25 billion. When citing statistics, accuracy matters and you were not "spot on"; you are still off by half a billion. 2019 is the only year to hit that $25 billion figure. Your post implied that total home entertainment spending was fairly static over the years and that was not the case. As you are the one maintaining the Home Video Sales thread, you above all people should post accurate statistics. ![]() The link that I used for the figures from 1999 to 2005 said their data came from the Digital Entertainment Group and that is a source that we both cite regularly. This link does not include rentals. https://www.widescreenreview.com/blog_detail.php?id=422 Last edited by Vilya; 08-28-2020 at 03:58 PM. |

Being off by a half billion is hardly "spot on." Statistical data is only worthwhile when cited accurately. Total home entertainment spending had not reached $25 billion until 2019; the 8 years preceding, 2011-2018, were all substantially lower than that. https://www.degonline.org/industry-data/ Last edited by Vilya; 08-28-2020 at 04:23 PM. |

Your larger point was that home entertainment spending was largely unchanged and that is not true. Total home entertainment spending is up 39.499% comparing 2011 to 2019. Total home entertainment spending was largely flat hovering around $18 billion each year from 2011 thru 2016. Substantial growth started to occur with year 2017 and it has grown every year since. https://www.degonline.org/industry-data/ Last edited by Vilya; 08-28-2020 at 04:23 PM. |
