The difference in color is one reason I consider HDR more of a gimmick than 3D. Cant recall the title but I remember a film in which a green mist became, with HDR on, a smurf-like blue mist. HDR is more inaccurate, which is why some filmmakers dislike it. One director said that he'd try and keep it off his movie on Blu. Well, a special edition of that movie is coming and it will not included HDR. (No, I wont name either for obvious reasons.) More recently, I'd seen 1989 Batman theatrically last summer so when the 4k version came out, it was fresh enough for me to compare. With HDR on, the I'm Batman scene gave us a one-eyed Batman, due to the darkening. Now when I use a 4k disc, I dont even bother with the HDR. I'll let others get excited over altering films. Like you said, one can watch whatever they think looks best. At least 3D adds to what's there rather then detracts.

Why didn’t 3D movies and TV ever catch on?
By Chris Morris
August 18, 2020

Quote:
The 3D revolution started a little over a decade ago. It didn’t last long.

While television manufacturers like Samsung, LG, and Panasonic bet big on the technology — and some top filmmakers, including James Cameron, made a convincing case for it in theaters — it had a lifespan of just seven years. So what happened? Why did 3D fail to catch on?

The obvious answer, of course, is the glasses. While less an issue in theaters, home users felt foolish having to wear a special set of glasses to watch TV. It didn’t help that most were bulky and had tech issues, as well.

But the fall of 3D goes much deeper than headgear. While the technology was the darling of marketing departments and heralded at CES as the next big thing, it failed to win some key supporters and failed consumers on several levels, hastening its demise.

That gave initial users a bad experience. And early adopters can act as either evangelists for a new technology or vocal detractors. In this case, they created a buzz the industry couldn’t overcome.
I remember every initial 3D review bringing up ghosting issues as if it was embedded in the source. No initial professional review blamed the display for the problems that were variably different per model, and/or certifying the 3D source to be ghost-free.

That's why we are debating this in the 3D forum instead of the 4K forum. We would be torched alive over there if we made these comments about 4K HDR being gimmicky.

I have been watching both 3D and 4K HDR movies since infancy of both formats and I can say your display will have tremendous effect on the experience you will with either. But in my view, I can say that the 3D experience will surpass any 4K HDR experience as long as 3D was done properly. I only collect 4K to have the best quality picture or movies that doesn't have a 3D counterpart. Even then, I tend to collect both so that I can have the best of both formats.

I have been watching a lot of 4K content and 3D contents due to not being able to go to the theaters and doing lot of just watching demo scenes that I love to re-watch in both 3D and HDR. When I do a A/B comparison of 4K HDR vs just HD... I have hard time telling what is really different. I mean... yes there is a difference but to my eyes... it's not dramatic enough that I could watch either way and be happy with it in 2D.

Now I do the same for 3D... and well.... some movies where the 3D is extreme... it's a totally different experience... I feel like the movie comes alive and I'm in the middle of it. 3D might be dead for mainstream but the people here in the 3D forum, it lives on and hope it continues to be released and supported for many many years to come.

3D - you either love it or you don't. I don't believe there is a middle ground - the casual 3D viewer. Those that love it will choose 3D over 2D at their local theater. Those that don't like it will avoid 3D presentations when they go to the cinema.

I used to love 3D. But as I got older, my vision changed just enough that now I can no longer watch 3D. Just 5 minutes into a 3D presentation and I get a splitting headache. As soon as I remove the glasses and look away from the screen, it immediately goes away.

Very sorry to hear that! That is one of my worst fears for my future! Have you tried an HMD where each eye looks at a 2D image separately with the alternate view?

I have a 3DTV BTW: Panasonic VIERA 55" Plasma HDTV. Came with 2 sets of shutter glasses - one still works. They produce the same effect: headache - same as when I went to a theater and tried to see 3D using polarized glasses.

When you watch 3D your eyes/brain are seeing two slightly different images which are then combined into one. It's that combining thing that gives me the headache so a HMD won't make a difference.

If you ever get the chance, I suggest you try it! You don't know where the problem starts.

Three years ago I was driving on the freeway, and suddenly my site developed double vision. I was scared to death. I could see clearly when closing each eye, but when both eyes were open the vision did not fuse together for depth. It didn't matter which eye I closed, my vision was clear only when using one eye at a time. I had to guess the distance using one eye, deciding to pull over and let my wife take over the wheel. Two points of view caused confusion and made it impossible for me to open/use both eyes at the same time. Fortunately this was a temporary moment that lasted about 10 minutes. Possibly a minute brain hemorrhage affecting fusion? The Optometrist never heard of such a thing happening as I explained I had two different views at the same time, and it hasn't happened since. A very confusing and helpless experience!

What will change in the future that would ignite a resurrection of 3DTV?

Active shutter glasses used to give me a headache and I can see the flicker too which was way too distracting. That problem went away when I got a passive LG 3D TVs... I have a 1080p set and a 4K OLED set. 3D has been wonderful on both TVs till I got my 3D 4k Projector.... and what is weird is that it uses active glasses and I don't have the issues above. I am thinking it is because the screen is so big.. or maybe faster refresh rate. Regardless... having the best time of my life for 3D movie watching.... so yeah.. 4K HDR is like just watching a TV show. 3D movie is like riding an amusement park ride.

@ckyllr Is the projector a DLP projector?

They operate at 144hz. So you have 3-D video flashing 72 frames each eye per second.

I have an Epson 5050ub... I think it is only 120Hz but I can be wrong. Regardless I haven't had issues with this setup. I also think it is due to some excellent 3D glasses I am using which is Xpand X105-RF-X1.

Is this a rear projection TV? or a Projector? or do they even have flat screen DLP TV?

NHK developing ‘glasses-free’ 3D TV system

Quote:
NHK has given details of Aktina Vision, a new 3DTV system, which the Japanese broadcaster says can be used for viewing natural 3D video without special glasses.

Aktina Vision – from the Greek word ‘Aktina’, meaning ray of light – reproduces the light rays from an object to display 3D images.

The resulting display represents a significant increase in resolution from about 300,000 pixels produced by NHK’s previous system to about 2,000,000 pixels on a par with HDTV.

The object is captured from different viewpoints at both horizontal and vertical locations to obtain multi-viewpoint images, which are used to reproduce the light rays from the object.

By increasing the number of the multi-viewpoint images and resolution of each image, natural high-resolution 3D video display can be achieved even when the viewer moves around horizontally and vertically around the viewing area.

Aktina Vision accommodates 72 multi-viewpoint images, video resolution is increased by using an 8K projector with a pixel-offset method

A special optical system then shifts and multiplexes the light rays of the 72 high-resolution multi-viewpoint images.

NHK says it plans to continue its research into 3D imaging and video compression to develop a next generation TV system.
https://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2020...-3d-tv-system/

You will notice on the second photo - the display: a dual panel LCD. This has already been shown at CES with good reviews. Reportedly Hisense is going to release one latter this year. This display type is now being used as professional monitors, replacing OLED monitors.

Please don't ask if this type of system is compatible with 3D BD. It isn't. But it may be the next variation of 3D. Years away from a consumer product. But it's good to know that a large company is doing research into Auto 3D.

Well not quite. WW84 is in 3D. And some titles are still being released on discs from Universal, WB, and boutique companies. Even Paramount is finally releasing Friday the 13th 3D with a new master. Not dead but certainly sabotaged.
