We’ve all been guilty of that at some point, and missed out on certain releases as a result. I bought my copy, years ago, at Fopp. Don’t think I paid more than £6.

Un Chien Andalou has always held a fascination for me, ever since it was used as an intro to David Bowie’s 1976 live performances. And I remember seeing L’Age d’Or on television sometime in the 1980s, so this was a natural purchase, for me.

A slightly mixed bag agreed but the two Algernon Blackwood readings are stunning. A real master of weird fiction conveying his own work in fine form.

Picking up for those two alone, proper Ghost Stories For Christmas material.

There doesn't appear to be a BR dot com entry for the BFI disc of L'age D'or ..

Yes, you have to just look up "d'Or" - unfortunately the a with the circumflex (â) doesn't match a regular 'a' character, so "L'age" won't find it. Also the lower case a with circumflex (â) won't match the upper case one (Â) either!

Friendship’s Death pushed until June 2021 for “scheduling reasons”, but it’s still premiering at LFF.

Given the film itself, it suits.
Time Out once infamously spelled the title that way in its cinema listings for that week.

10 days on from placing an order for L'age d'or, Simply Home Entertainment have yet to send me a cancellation email ! At this point, it's getting on my nerves. I'm thinking of that line from a jumpy Frederic Forrest in Apocalypse Now: "Why don't they f**kin attack, man!"

@CelestialAgent - did you hear anything from them about your order ?

A cinema I used to work in announced the showing time for a film called 'Dan's Paris', it turned out be 'Dans Paris' with Romain Duris.

Received my copy of L'age d'or from CeX today, surprisingly it's in great condition with nothing amiss.

Back in the 1990s, Alexander Walker - the Evening Standard's redoubtably fastidious and closeted doyen of moralistic film reviewing - took a whole page to offer up his thoughts on a new Woody Allen work referred to in print throughout as Blitz Over Broadway. It must have been the clipped fey brogue down the end of a phone line......

One of my biggest surprises was getting to know Walker professionally and to my great amazement finding out that even though we disagreed on almost everything (our one main point of agreement being the shared belief that Wilf Stevenson was a dangerous idiot who was running the BFI into the ground with his internal market/film is a mere chemical process/cultural renewal staff culls and Birtspeak bollocks management style), we actually got on really well and he was a surprisingly easygoing, helpful and generous sort of chap. It's always a weird experience when you find out that one of your bete noirs is a decent bloke. He must have got all the vitriol out of his system in his column.

Wilf Stevenson must feel at home in the House of Lords

I find that, in general, the boutique label releases are nearly always mint. I suppose the average joe doesn't buy them so once they have been sold, they sit untouched until another collector-type picks them up.

I agree with you there - they usually sit around for weeks and months, even if it’s OOP, with people put off by a £10 price tag.

It was a year or so Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence stuck around in Norwich before I bought it. Weekend was in CEX Ipswich in December 2019 and again last August when I bought it.
