Wasn't the new 4K restoration made by Pegasus? Both this and Ronny Yu's The Phantom Lover received new 4K restorations recently, both restorations got Taiwan re-release back in June and shown in this year's Shanghai International Film Festival, I heard it looked similar to the French blu-ray.

This will be the fifth time that I buy this movie (previous versions: Australian VHS, British VHS, US DVD, Chinese BD) and as far as I can tell it will be the last because this is going to be the definitive version.

the preview they gave on their FB page with that color correction, along with all these extras...I would agree. I won't have to buy this film again.

That would really clear up the issue and hopefully relieve some stress regarding what we will actually be getting.
There is a French review here with 13 screenshots from the 1st movie : http://retro-hd.com/tests/blu-ray/29...ux-blancs.html

It's a 2019 4K restoration from the OCN, supervised by Yu. It's not mentioned in the review, but I think it was done in France. I'm surprised Eureka are now claiming their release will be "newly colour graded exclusively by Eureka Entertainment and officially approved by director Ronny Yu" since based on this, I'd suppose the restoration released in France already should match Yu's wishes and wouldn't need a new different grading.

This new colour grading is not revisionist is it?

I am friend with Frank Djeng who produced the Eureka Blu Ray (He also produced the Tai Seng DVD 20 years ago and knows Ronny personally) and asked him about this. His response:

1. According to Ronny, France/Spectrum presented him with the master but by then it's already at the release stage and also there was no visual reference to show Ronny how different the color scheme was from the HK theatrical print.

2. Eureka got a copy of the Tai Seng DVD, and the TS DVD master was taken directly off the HK theatrical print which of course preserved Peter Pau's color scheme. Eureka became concerned with how different the colors were between the TS DVD and the 4K master that they got from the distributor and checked with Frank who saw the film theatrically back in 1993. Frank confirmed that Ronny approved the TS DVD master when he recorded the audio commentary and presented Ronny with side-by-side comparisons and Ronny immediately noticed the difference. He gave the OK for Eureka to do the new color grading to match the colors on the TS DVD and gave his seal of approval upon seeing the final product.

It's not revisionist at all--it's preserving Ronny's and Peter Pau's original vision and color palette for the film so that what you see on the Eureka Blu-ray will be identical to how you would've seen the film theatrically almost 30 years ago.

Frank also said that if there are enough "votes" from folks then Eureka will consider releasing BRIDE 2 (which needs more extensive restoration than Part 1) and Ronny's THE PHANTOM LOVER, also with Leslie Cheung.

The film sounds interesting and the extras look great - 81 minutes is a very long interview, that's almost feature length! Could be it's own documentary rather than just an interview?

Funny you mentioned this because I asked Frank about it too! He said the Facebook announcement was correct but the one on the Eureka website had a mistake--the Richard Yuen interview and the David Wu interview's duration were reversed. The David Wu interview was the 81 minutes one. Frank said he interviewed David but Richard shot his talk by himself.

Frank said David (who spoke English for the interview) was funny and very talkative and the interview covered tons of stuff--not just about BRIDE 1 but also BRIDE 2, David's editing work on other films like John Woo's THE KILLER, and his views on other films/editors (He's not a fan of the Michael Bay-style of rapid editing). In fact, Frank got concerned since he only blocked a 90 minute ZOOM session for David. Luckily the interview got done 4 minutes before the session ended!

Frank said his goal was to make Eureka's Blu Ray the best of all the releases, which is why he tried to include as many interviews as he could. He's sad that he couldn't get Peter Pau as he's busy shooting Wong Ka Wai's TV series in China and ZOOM is no longer directly available there but he was overcome with joy with the new color grading. He's seen the new master and he said it's gorgeous.

Thank you Parsifal

I have the Spectrum release as well as the Tai Seng DVD and was quite amazed by the difference, the Spectrum is very bright and made the costumes in the film appear to be a different colour. Looking at the trailer from Eureka it does look like the TS version with much more detail and the dark cinematography by Peter Pau being absolutely incredible, this is surely the best release this film has ever got.

The extras including interviews with the editor David Wu will be fascinating especially as he's worked with John Woo on his most famous HK films as well Christopher Gans on some of his French films.
Another highlight will be the interview with the musical composer as Bride With The White Hair in my opinion contains one of the greatest scores of a HK genre film ever.

Thank you for all yours and IronGods hard work!

Eureka delivered the new scan to me and I immediately knew something was wrong and I pushed them hard to do the color regrade.

At first they must have thought I was crazy
for they thought Ronny Yu had approved the
scan on the Spectrum French bluray.

He obviously didn't.

I sent Eureka a comparison video using the
Tai Seng DVD and thankfully they contacted Ronny Yu and we were given the green light
to bring back the original colors!

Also special thanks to member Revoloution
for helping me out on this.

My PMs are cleared out now so please

Guys please show this release some love and get your preorders in so we can get the second film restored.

WOW!!!! This is going to be an amazing release. I am glad I had already pre-ordered mine. I vote to release 2 and The Phantom Lover too. I really liked Phantom Lover alot. Really glad they got Frank involved and they are fixing the colors. November is too far away.

Actually, given the amount of work that appears to have gone into this release, it might have been a good opportunity for Eureka to give a HK UHD a try.

I myself found the new 4K restoration (as released in France) to have quite a modern-looking grading : the teals and oranges are not something I've often seen in older movies but a lot more in some recent restorations or recent movies. It looked OK though, and I didn't know this very-stylised movie well enough to judge beyond that, but it did feel quite modern-looking.

I wasn't implying that, but was just wondering why Yu would approve a grading only to have it redone a year later. I would understand when it's much later, much that's very close to each other which triggered my curiosity.

Spectrum just confirmed on Twitter he approved the grading, their PR claimed he approved the final restoration, and Parsifal just stated he was presented with a final master he approved. So technically, he did give his approval.

I have the Spectrum edition. I'll buy this one too because i don't like how the green and orange colors are in the french edition. It looks like something very different than the style of colors from the period. The strong "night blue" is not there in the french edition. I was a little surprised by that.
