Does anyone have any insight into which directors might receive Criterion box sets during 2021 and 2022? I found a 2017 post on IMDB listing directors with the most individual releases. The list below is not up-to-date but gives a general sense of who might be on the horizon. Of course, the number of individual release is not the only or best criteria. Who has rights to the film(s) is also key, among others, such as whether the director is still releasing films.
Truffaut was born in 1932, so maybe he gets a box set in 2022? I’m also wondering if there is a Chaplin box set on the horizon. Chaplin is not on the list, below, but I think Criterion has released around 8 of his films. ~20+ films 1. Bergman (box set) ~17 films 2. Kurosawa 3. Malle ~11-14 films 4. Ozu 5. Godard 6. Fellini (box set) 7. Renoir ~9-10 films 8. Misumi 9. Powell 10. Buñuel 11. Fassbinder 12. Melville 13. Rossellini 14. Truffaut |

This is more of a wish than an actual expectation, but I'm really hoping for a John Waters boxset. Even if it's not all of his films, I still think it's possible for the majority of his films to be compiled together (most of them all have the same distributor, Warner)

Kurosawa seems likely as he has been a cornerstone of the Criterion Collection for years however, issues such as the 4K remaster of Seven Samurai may hold things up. I would love a Jean Pierre Melville box and an Ozu set as well rumored Wong Kar-Wai collection.

Hoping for a Lars Von Trier set. I'm particularly interested in The Element of Crime. I understand Von Trier is currently restoring some of his films in Europe so maybe something will happen next year.

Kurosawa would be an obvious but a welcome one (Even though I own all the Blu-ray titles) but I would love to see Ozu as well (If he was alive much longer, we could've had a four seasons series since he made a film for nearly every season except for winter).
The one I want to get is a Resnais set (Because he's my favorite director) but LYaM, Je T'aime, and some of his smaller titles seem to be distributed all over the place. I would die of happiness if a Resnais set ever comes to life. Same with Jean-Pierre Melville but Criterion only owns about 3 or 4 of them sadly (Rest probably went to Kino). A Bunuel set is also something I really want since most of his stuff is OOP but with the combination of that and new restorations (Hoping his 70s French and early 60s Spanish works get restorations). The StudioCanal boxset sounds good to me but it has its share of problems I heard. John Woo boxset is something I wouldn't mind double dipping. In comparison to Resnais and Melville, it seems quite possible since most of the titles are by Fortune Star while Hard Boiled is Mei Ah. If they just collaborate together with Criterion help unite these two different companies to create a Woo boxset, that would be nice (Just like the BLu-ray Hitchcock boxset). Truffaut is something I really want also as well. But what surprises me the most is that it seems like none of his titles (Except for Day for Night) had a restoration (Correct me if I'm wrong since I don't know if all of his titles had restorations or not). Even 400 Blows, which I think is an obvious one, didn't have a new restoration yet. I'm hoping there are restorations under development right now because I think it's about time to re-release these titles. I will be waiting and I had to skip out on the $5 Antoine Doinel boxset deal I saw on eBay a few days ago because I have so much hope for a Truffaut set and I hope it will happen soon. But, I have the Criterion Channel so I don't need to worry as much but I don't think I'll be holding onto the Channel subscription for long (I got a year subscription for my birthday but I might not get one next year). |

Too bad the rumoured Paul Morrissey boxset never materialized. And it probably won't until Morrissey passes on since in his old age he's apparently become an impossible-to-deal-with old crank.
