Potemkin is a must-see film. I keep meaning to pick up the Kino release but just haven't got around to it, but Potemkin is one of those films you need to see at least once.

Absolutely. Just know that the BFI release is pretty scratchy, but has plenty of detail underneath those scratches. I get used to them pretty quickly so it doesn't bother me, but YMMV.

Just keep an eye out in case your copy is the original pressing which has a quick replacement program:

Note that the UK edition had a faulty first pressing:

After the release of our Dual Format Edition of Battleship Potemkin/Drifters it became apparent that there was a technical fault with the presentation of Potemkin on the Blu-ray Disc. We have therefore re-authored and re-pressed the project, and replacement Blu-ray Discs are now available. If you are dissatisfied with the quality of the original Blu-ray Disc and would like a replacement, please contact Ben.Stoddart@bfi.org.uk giving details of your name and address and, if possible, proof of purchase and a new disc will be sent to you as soon as possible. We are extremely grateful to you for your patience and understanding during the period it has taken to resolve this matter.

The faulty disc's runtime for "Battleship Potemkin" runs at (68:51) while the corrected disc runs at (68:49)

Hurriedly rushes to check his copy that he hasn't got round to watching in the five years he's had it...

...and it's the buggered one.

Thanks for the info, guys! But still the BFI is the best UK/Europe edition of the film? I can find it on a danish BD too, and that is also very cheap. I figured the BFI would be the best edition.

This is the danish version available:

Just ordered Pocketful of Miracles since I had the Kino on my wishlist since release.

Beaver says higher Bitrate, richer colors, 24-bit linear PCM 2.0 channel track, Extras and a booklet ...

I ordered it too, I got an email saying its release was pushed back?
I still ordered the German BD weeks ago, I didn't want to have to wait.

Is anyone looking for a copy of L'age D'or. I now have a spare used copy , that I haven't played myself. No booklet I'm afraid.

Does anyone know why Base.com have stopped listed new BFI titles. Nothing available more recent than this week’s titles. So none of the titles coming in remainder of year available to pre-order.

Pity if there’s been a falling out between Base and the BFI as they normally had the lowest price on new titles.

I noticed this also—hoping it’s only temporary.

Starting on Early Women Filmmakers. Did they get the framerate wrong for The Making of an American Citizen? It seems to move too slowly, like in slow motion, with a ghostly outline?

Falling Leaves is a really great start to the set though.

I’m not sure if it’s the same exact issue, I don’t have the BFI set, but this film is similarly screwed up on the US Flicker Alley set.

I have that film on Kino’s Movies Begin box set, so I just watch it there - completely smooth on both fronts (no screw up, no modern day progressive jerkiness.)

I was having a look at the different releases, but not only does the BFI set not really hold a candle to how comprehensive Pioneers: First Women Filmmakers is by comparison (the restorations seem to be exclusive to that set - most of the films aren’t streaming anywhere, and if they are, they’re in crappy SD prints with creative commons scores added on), but there are exclusives to the Flicker Alley release too, despite being a disc shorter than the BFI.

Exclusive to FA:

Les Chiens Savants (1902)
Une Histoire Roulante (1906)
La Barricade (1907)
The Star Prince (1918)
Harlequin (1931)
The Stolen Heart (1934)
Papageno (1935)
A Night on Bald Mountain (1933)
Day of Freedom (1935)
Spook Sport (1939)
Meshes in the Afternoon (1943)

Audio Commentary on The Blot by Shelley Stamp.

I suppose removing a Nazi film makes sense, at least.

The BFI has these films in common with the Kino:

Greater Love Hath No Man (1911)
Algie the Miner (1912)
Falling Leaves (1912)
Matrimony's Speed Limit (1913)
The Ocean Waif (1916)
Suspense (1913)

Documentary Short: Alice Guy-Blache (1080p; 8:24)
Documentary Short: Lois Weber (1080p; 8:35)
Documentary Short: Mabel Normand (1080p; 7:56)

Of course, Kino also has Alice Guy-Blaché boxsets, and Meshes in the Afternoon is on their Maya Deren boxset.

Can't find any official word on the matter, but if my Hive order is correct, the Play for Today set has been put back two weeks. Not that I need it right away, BBC4 are due to start a short run of repeats and a new documentary from next week.
