I think you're confusing Death[True]² (i.e. the 3rd and final version of "Death") with the 1998 "Revival of Evangelion" theatrical rerelease, which consists of Death[True]², Episode 25' "Air", and Episode 26' "Magokoro wo Kimi ni" presented all together as one feature film.

Note that GKIDS only being able to license Death[True]² and The End of Evangelion is in line with Anno's view that "Revival of Evangelion" is the true final form of what "Death and Rebirth" was originally meant to be before production delays necessitated splitting the project into two separate films. That's been a consistent stance since no later than 2003, as all Japanese home video releases since then went with Revival instead of D&R + EoE (except for the BD box set which had both versions, and the "Archives of Evangelion" DVD box which only had the previously WOWOW-exclusive Death[True] & Rebirth but no EoE).

Wait, so Death[True]² isn't a revamp of Death and Rebirth?

I'll be honest, that's what I always though it was, as I never actually saw the Manga DVD release of Death and Rebirth. Never really cared for recap movies; same with why I skipped Rebuild 1.11.

When was Death(True) even a thing? I've always known it as Death & Rebirth. This is (not) good marketing for Evangelion properties.

I'm not sure if most of the iterative re-releases of Death/Rebirth made it over here. Death has been tweaked a few times; Death(True)², the current version, is what's on Netflix and confirmed for Blu.

I'm going to revise the official Anime LTD Evangelion thread to include GKids in light of this recent news.

• Death & Rebirth - original versions. Death is an arty TV 1-24 recap with some new scenes. Rebirth is just the first 26 min of End of Eva, which wasn't ready yet. A few of the new scenes from Death were recut into TV eps 21-24 to make the Director's Cut.

• Death(true) - A recut of the Death segment only, with the scenes that were moved to the Director's Cut TV episodes removed (about 4 min total). Only broadcast on TV (on premium satellite channel WOWOW).

• Death(true)^2 - A slight revision, only adding a couple of new shots to make it flow better, as part of the "Revival of Evangelion" theatrical re-release. After this ends, there's an intermission screen, followed by EoE. This is considered to be the final version.

• End of Evangelion - Feature film in two acts: Air (Episode 25' -- note the apostrophe to indicate "prime") and My Truest Heart For You (Episode 26'). Used this unusual format to have credits in the middle; and none at the end, the better to emotionally punch you in the face and run.

• End of Evangelion - Video version - splits up the two acts into two parts, to be paired with TV eps 25 and 26 on VHS and LD. Aside from adding extra credits, a next-ep preview and modified eyecatch slates, no significant changes.

• End of Evangelion - Revival version - Combined with Death(true)^2. Back to being one film. I'm unaware of any other changes made to this version. This is considered to be the final version.

Hope that clears some things up.

Ohhhhhhh, so the recap is entirely just Death, and Rebirth is just a preview for EoE. No wonder Death is emphasized in future releases. Thanks, Savvy Sevakis.

Still think Death[True]² is an odd name to say out loud.

It's kind of a shame imo that what seems to be the new standard export package completely omits Rebirth. It is mostly redundant, but there are differences between it and EoE, plus "Soul's Refrain" is an absolute banger and deserves to be included.

I wouldn't mind the option to watch Death & Rebirth and the original broadcast versions of episodes 21-24 as a extra but I don't see it happening. Ultimately nothing is really being left out, but just having the options to watch those as they were originally first shown would be interesting.

I'd love for this set to have all of the bells and whistles but I'm not expecting much more than what Netflix offered.

Should be noted that Manga Entertainment's Rebirth used footage from The End of Evangelion for some reason, we've never gotten the actual Rebirth.
Quote:
Notes: Death(True)² is the version of “Death” used in this release. What is purported to be “Rebirth” on this disc is actually the corresponding footage from “The End of Evangelion” with Rebirth’s title cards and ending credits inserted where they should normally be. The reasons behind this are unknown.

I love a film's release variations being confusing and untidy.

To an extent, you can also put 1.0 in that category.

The simplest (legit) solution for the TV broadcast versions is to buy the Japanese "Archives of Evangelion" DVD box and mux in your own subs.

As for the original Death and Rebirth, it's only found in the Japanese BD box set and nowhere else. Even the 1998 Japanese theatrical box set on Laserdisc used Death[True]² in place of the original Death.

That's why I took all the time to create my Compendium back in the day.

Honestly, though, I hope they're allowed the chance to do a new subtitle translation, or at least make some revisions to Khara's. I'm all for including the ADV dub, but when it comes to how I personally like to watch the show, I usually stick with subs.

Did we ever get a firm answer on whether Netflix was obliged to use Khara's scripts as-is or just did so because it was less work?

I seriously doubt there will be subtitle changes. It's possible, but with Khara being the way they are, it's unlikely.

So, what are the chances of it having the original English dub and Fly Me to the Moon at the end? I'm thinking the chances are slim, but there still might be a chance right?

Well I'm not buying any "Ultimate edition" without Fly Me To The Moon.
