And subs. They butchered the dialogue and I refused to show my gf the series because of how bad they effed it up.

Yeah, Third Child has always made more sense to me then "Third Children" since their are not multiple Shinjis.

Are we sure of that, with the multiple timelines theories?

I mean, one could argue that in EoE there are for part of it, but besides that the rest of time there is just one.

I hope the Ultimate Edition is packaged like the gorgeous original JP box.

Bought the Japanese standard BD last year; I doubt I doubt this release will have Japanese subtitles to prevent reverse-importing, which is a bummer since JP audio+subs have become my preferred way of watching anime.

Shamelessly (entry) plugging a self-duet I made of the opening song to commemorate the show's 25th airing anniversary this past weekend:

I'm just glad they changed the terminology of "Children/Child" for the Rebuild movies.

All the characters in this franchise are intentionally flawed. I've accepted this conclusion once I understand Anno's game and the whole thematic structure of it. Shinji being weak-willed, Asaka's being ill-tempered, and Rei being Rei---among others, all serve a given psychological study over the course of the story.

I love Shinji all the more for being a pathetic little *****. Not everyone can be a badass like Vegeta.

I understand Khara being unhappy with Funimation's handling of 3.0 -- even speaking as someone who doesn't really have a problem with fairly liberal localizations, it does sound like they went a bit overboard -- but I'm not really familiar with the issues with Funimation other than that. Can anyone fill me in?

Also, that's interesting to hear about GKIDS' reputation -- I have a handful of their releases and they all struck me as perfectly good but not really remarkable per se. Am I missing something?

Yeah, it would be nice to just get a new translation, or at least a decent revision of Khara's. I've given my thoughts on the whole Kaworu thing over in another thread, but the scripts in general are simultaneously weirdly literal and littered with little choices here and there that feel like they had ulterior motives.

For Anime distribution in the USA, perfectly good releases is legitimately a good track record. Funimation is often hit and miss and their misses can often be disastrous. Their handling of Dragon Ball Z on Blu-ray has been a joke with constant and horrible DNR, awful color enhancement to the point of bleeding colors, and constant desire to crop the show's picture into 16:9 (and in the case of the recent releases crop the already cropped 16:9 picture into 4:3 instead of using the natural 4:3 picture). And that's just with Dragon Ball Z, they've done many other mistakes besides that. Aniplex likes to constantly milk its customers with ridiculous overpriced releases with not a whole lot of content, $70 for a 2 movie double feature with barebones extras is price gouging as far as I'm concerned. Sentai Filmworks often does their own thing and often doesn't target many huge titles, targeting the more niche stuff, but I haven't heard much bad things about them. Discotek is pretty good, but also often targets the niche audience. GKIDS is the only distributor I know that balances big mainstream titles with some more niche stuff (and also licenses more than just anime, getting animation from worldwide, giving them wider exposure in audience and releases), has their releases properly priced, and has pretty damn good quality control. I mean, quite a bit of their Ghibli releases absolutely outclass the old Disney releases either in picture quality (Nausicaä), audio options (Castle in the Sky), proper subtitles (Mononoke), or bonus features (Ponyo).

Hope this set at the very least has decent subtitles instead of the trash new translation done for the Netflix release (handled entirely by this really old conservative dude lol). And the original stereo mix from the pre-Renewal version included on the Japanese BDs as an option.

Ultimately no point for me if it doesn't have the ADV dub. I'll stick with the encodes on my HDDs.

The problem with the show is that for the first 24 episodes, the story is building very strongly, the action is well paced, you're invested in what is going on and "Man, I cant wait to see how this ends!"

And then the series completely shits the bed.

They ran out money, and they ran out of time and [spoilers]Basically made up some free-form stream of consciousness over a bed of random, very crude black and white "animation" that tells you ****all about the story and serves to wrap nothing up whatsoever.[/spoilers]

I bought the original ADV DVDs for 5 bucks and regret every penny I wasted on that shit ending. I wanted to punch my TV, so I walked away and never looked back.

Even worse? In response to the fan backlash of the shit ending, the director [spoilers]went "Oh yeah, you want to see a REALLY bad ending?" and then made a movie where the lead masterbated over the unconscious form of the female lead in a hospital bed.[/spoilers]

After that I dropped the discs off at goodwill and walked away.
