Just how sensitive is the harmony one remote? Meaning do you have to point the remote directly at the components in order for it to work. Basically my couch faces the wall that my TV is hanging on (normal setup), but my rack that is built into the wall is basically at a 90 degree angle to the wall the TV is hanging on. All the components are exposed, there is no door in front or anything.

I attached a simple diagram of my setup. If the thin black line is the room and my component rack is off to the side. The arrow indicates which way the face of all the components are facing. The green line is a solid wall. So the only opening is where the arrow is.

Hope I didn't confuse anyone. I just want to get a universal remote but just want to make sure I will be able to use an IR remote or I am going to have to get a RF. Thanks.

you should be ok. my playstation is on the floor next to my entertainment center. It's on the left side. I can point my Harmony at my sub and control the PS3...

edit: and to clarify, you cannot see the PS3 from my sofa. let me dig out a drawing i did.

The wall worries me a bit... are the components recessed? you may have an issue from the right side of the sofa, but not the left... anyone else?

I think with that setup you'll have some problems with the One. I have had some very minor issues with the One controlling components and I have a good line of sight so I doubt it would work well for you. I'd recommend getting the 890 or 1000/1100 and the RF kit.

All the components are exposed and are not recessed. I am just trying to figure how sensitive it is. I never have a problem when I currently use my cable box remote. I can point it anywhere and it will work, but my remote to my Pioneer receiver is ridiculous, I have to more or less be directly pointing it at the unit or there will be no response.

Thanks I really wanted to get a remote with a screen and some flexibility, but didn't want to spend an arm and a leg for the 1100. I guess maybe that will make me go out and get some controlled lights so I can use the remote for more functions

I generally sit on the sofa against the wall. Feet all up on the furniture and stretched out The sub is the blu box in the top left corner. The PS3 is next to the blue box in the bottom left corner. I can point the remote at the sub and control the PS3 no problem. Hell I can point it at the armrest of the sofa and control the PS3.

yeah but I think that you are still facing the front of your PS3. My stuff would basically be at a 90 degree angle to how I am sitting. Not too sure yet what I am going to do. Thanks for you diagram though.

I think since your components aren't recessed that you'll probably be alright. In my situation, If I'm sitting on the left-hand side of the sofa, I have to raise my One up a little higher than normal so the coffee table doesn't block the signal to my AVR. The AVR sits is in the opposite end of my ET stand and on the bottom. Pics are in my HT Gallery if that will help give you an idea of what I'm talking about. Other than that I have no trouble at all. In your situation, it looks to me like you should be fine if you're pointing the remote in the area between your TV and components.

yeah I still am skeptical that I will have problems considering your stuff is still facing you...I guess I can always buy one and test it out.

Yeah unfortunately I guess you'll never know for sure until you try it. If it doesn't work out well enough, I'm sure you can always sell it without taking a loss.

It might, but I would try the One by itself before spending money on that thing. If you're not satisfied with just the One, then consider trying something like that.

can you use a personal picture to be on the LCD screen? I think I've seen this on a few peoples pictures of their Harmony One.

Liquid, there is a feature in the software that allows you to upload your own images. I played with it once for a couple of minutes, but gave up on it. I cropped my pic down to the specified size, but it still kept telling me the file was too big. I'm sure I was probably doing something wrong, but I didn't keep messing with it long enough to figure out what.
