I might have ordered the set, but a lot of good stuff seems to be coming out. I just signed up for AT&T wireless and HBO Max came free. I haven’t seen what’s on it, but I’m thinking GOT may be there.

Years later it was finally done and would have gotten the Blu-ray set, but with a 4K set almost a given it would be worth waiting for that instead, and now here we finally are, almost 10 years later.

You don't seem to have an option for the Steelbooks yet.
Interesting... they list theirs for $289, and Amazon.ca bumped theirs up to $289 also. I'm glad I ordered it at $209.

What if I told you...I prolly won't be watching it anytime soon after buying it, there's so much UHD goodness this year!

You really should. Do be prepared to put other plans on hold though once you get started.

I do wonder what it would be like to have access to the entire series for your first viewing. I could see folks binging the first few seasons but possibly hitting a wall during the middle seasons and walking away from it for a while. Much like the books, the series isn't exactly consistent.

Actually I disagree. Even if you accept that the final seasons were not as good as what came before, there's always so many reasons to keep watching. There's either really good episodes or episodes where there are major plot twists, and the very best where both are true.

The criticism of the later seasons didn't really pick up steam until the penultimate episode of Season 7. At that point I'd argue you are more-or-less committed to watching the entire thing.

If you take the middle seasons as being those with the middle episodes in, so those around episode 37ish, that would be late season 3-4 to season 5-6ish depending on wide you want to define the middle, I'd say that a significant number of the very best epsiodes fall in that section.

It was consistent for me and I couldn't imagine walking away from it. Considering that the ratings on this show got better every season, I think most people would agree.

Nope and that's unlikely to change any time soon.

Sure. Lots of people love the show and every season has its moments. Still, I know I'm not alone in thinking that it has its weaker seasons and that it ends in a whimper.

But again, I'm curious how different it would feel to binge watch the show compared to having to wait nearly 10 years for it all to come to a close. And of course whether you've read the books will also impact how you experience the show.

If nothing else I think it will be a significantly different experience watching the show for the first time when you have it all at hand and I'm curious to see how it goes for those folks.

I was lucky in that I watched them all pretty much together. I did wait 8 months for season 8 to come out on 4K before watching it for the first time and was glad I did.

Re-watched the series in July myself. This set will be collecting dust for me for about 9 months. lol

Quality of the show takes a big dip Season 5 onwards. The last two seasons are a big logical cluster****. But even I didn't hate the final season like the majority do.

I would say seasons 1-4 are some of the best television I've ever seen.
Season 5 started to turn into a parody of itself in ways, going for excessive cliches and more simplistic story beats. Also, if you read the book, many of the editorial decisions/changes from the book were questionable at best, and outright mind-numbingly illogical at its worst. - Not having knowledge of the book helps, in this case.

Season 6 was, in my opinion, quite bad. The "Battle of the Bastards" is very cinematic, and beautiful... but gosh-darn a really, really illogical battle that made my head spin. Also, the deus ex machina threw me for a major loop.
The "new" bad guy is so terribly evil that I thought I was watching a parody.

Season 7, I learned to accept it as "dumb, big fun".
Season 8 was the worst season, more than season 5 or 6. But... it was finally over, and I was relieved that I no longer needed to hope for something better, nor wait for further seasons of emotional turmoil for What Could Have Been. But my God, it was obvious that the writers had little talent when it came to understanding how to build off the foundation set by the books.

So, overall a mixed bag. But worth a watch, especially if you have foreknowledge that the show could potentially not maintain the S1-4 glory days.
Because so many people love this show, I recommend it to everyone. YMMV, more so for this show than almost any other.

I agree about season 6. Moreover if you take out Hodor, BotB and the sept (which was ridiculous in and out of itself) you basically get a big pile of nothing and just a waste of time. I'd even say that season 6 was worse than season 5. And I agree about Ramsay. A lot of people like to throw around "Mary Sue" but no one talks about how Ramsay is basically a "Marty Stu" villain up to the point where he doesn't serve anything anymore.

I also agree about season 7, everything was dumb but enjoyable dumb.

Regarding season 8 - I honestly think that season 8 is as bad as previous seasons, but because it was the last season then fans weren't willing to give it the benefit of the doubt (no more "well it's stupid but maybe it has some significant for upcoming episodes so let's see"). Some say they should have given it more episodes, but IMO that wouldn't have saved anything because the writers' priorities were what was messed up.

IMO the King's Landing battle and destruction should have happened in season 7. Season 8 should have been solely about the long night and Daenerys' redemption and sacrifice.

I have my qualms about season 2-4, especially season 4 after the Purple wedding (the jumping the shark episode IMO), but I'll keep them to myself because it always gets me into trouble, but basically the only good adaptation is season 1 and even that has its issues (not major ones though).

Ramsay was one of those mustache-twirling, finger twitching, over-the-top characters that gleefully revel in their own evilness. I equate that character to Doctor Doom in "Fantastic Four" (1994). It would be funny, if it was in a charmingly stupid movie to watch with some popcorn. Sadly, it was happening in GoT rofl

HMV have just 10 minutes ago notified me of a two-week delay on the release date of the Steelbooks version. A quick search isn't bringing up this information elsewhere and they all have it listed for the first week on November still. Anyone else heard anything?

I adored this show, it's a damn shame the writing team just seemed to give up at the end and the final season was one of the biggest let downs after all the build up in previous seasons.

Dumping a lot of stuff from the books was the right call imo especially since the god damm books are not even finished yet If they introduced lady stone heart what the hell do they do with her since George’s story is not even finished we and D&D don’t know and if she was super important to his endgame I’m sure he would have told D&D.

It’s an insanely difficult task to wrap this show up in a logical satisfying conclusion I bet that’s why George is taking so long. The difference there is he can have all the time he wants to do it but with TV productions especially as big as GOT it’s just no way possible.

I envy new viewers haha and say when binge watching treat S7&8 as one long final season it’s only 13 episodes 3 longer than the usual GOT season sure 3 episodes got an extra 15mins slapped on not a big deal HBO
Made it sound like all 6 episodes were going to be full length 2 hour movies before release such bullshit
