I found Thrones went from being a carefully adapted masterpiece of sorts, to turning into a plain old great television series. All the groundwork laid out in those first few seasons meant that as we got into the home straight the emotional ties carried it through the choppy rushed waters. At least for me.
Once it got ahead of the books it did change up a bit. A show that once felt intelligent and awash with detail inevitably felt ever so slightly dumbed down. No less entertaining though. The drama from beginning to end was as consistently powerful to me through all the years. The big moments and showdowns I anticipated all delivered.

I’ll freely admit the overall quality wasn’t as good the final couple of years than what came before. I wish they hadn’t been in such a rush as that last season could and should have been around half a dozen episodes longer. But I still found it thrilling.

Best show of all time? It’s up there. What a ride.

I definitely want to get these at some point.

I think it's great to see people defending this show. Personally i wasn't as enamored with it from the start like many people seem to be, but i personally felt that it got better and better as it went along, and quite frankly, i barely had any problems with the last season at all, but that's just me. Actually, i started missing the show so much after it was done that i started reading the books. I read the first one quite fast, but trying to pace myself with reading them so it won't be torture having to wait for the final two.

Yep, this was based on a book series, but the last two haven't been finished yet. The book series is called A Song of Ice and Fire.

I watched the whole thing in 2 weeks. I wanted to slow down mid way, but did not want to take a break. The main thing I've noticed is that season 7 and 8 were my favorite seasons whereas it seems most people that watched along the way don't like them. I didn't have time to give much thought to how things would go down or get attached to particular theories.

The problem is that there were few solid motivations for the pendulum swings in the character arcs in the last two seasons.

This is when D&D had almost nothing from George R.R. Martin to work with and they just winged it. It shows they knew nothing about these characters or even cared.

Most of them seemed to turn dumb for plot conveniences and contrivances, and then they rushed Season 8 to move on to Star Wars (or so they thought), from which they were let go due to the fan backlash from Season 8. Disney brass were like ruh ro.

I wish people would quit this bullshit. Season 8 was one of the longest productions in the history of television.

That has NOTHING to do with giving time for the story and characters to breath and episode count (Season 8 was truncated). There were delays because of production tax issues.

Yes, I'm sure they slaved over the show for over a decade because they cared nothing about the characters. I am glad they didn't waste their time on Star Wars. Those films has been artistically dead for almost 40 years.

Like most people that attack the show, you have no idea what you are talking about.

I was hooked at the end of the first season, but it wasn't one of those shows (like Breaking Bad) where I was hooked after a few episodes.

Apparently, you're not too keen on character development or plausibility in storylines.

If you know anything about the duo of D&D their main motivation was and is money. Love of profit does not make for a good show.

Martin was hand holding them for most of the run and then when his contributions petered out, they were left floundering.

It’s pretty funny to still see stuff like this over a year after it’s release. Talking out of their asses because they didn’t like the ending. You love to see it.

Every time someone says they liked it or didn’t understand why the backlash was so strong, someone has to come in and explain it for them.

Now that some time has passed I'm not as keen to criticize the show as I was right after the final season aired, but I also think it's foolish to dismiss all criticism of the show. It just reeks of fanboyism or feels implicitly dishonest. If nothing else it's clear that once they lost the lifeline of the source material that D&D never really did have a strong understanding of the characters or the world and the final seasons suffered for it. I still praise them for how they adapted the existing books and I guess it's possible that the final season could have been even worse, so at this point I'm just trying to be happy with what we have. I still understand why some folks are bitter about how it ended, though, and it's certainly not fair to say they don't know what they're talking about. I think a lot of people who were the most disappointed are actually quite invested in the franchise.

Agreed. Most people that were disappointed with the show were book readers, some have read the books years before the show, some have read them multiple times and have been analyzing them for years. So it's funny to see a "you have no idea what you are talking about" aimed at people who have invested in the story deeply and for a long time.
