John Madden, 73, has announced his retirement from broadcasting.
It's hard to imagine Sundays without Madden after 30 years in broadcasting. "I still love every part of it ... but I know this is the right time," Madden said. Madden called his eleventh Super Bowl in Tampa, won 16 Emmy Awards, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame for coaching in 2006. Cris Collinsworth filled in for Madden last year for one game, and makes the logical replacement. Madden will talk about the move at 11:15ET on his radio show. Apr. 16 - 10:43 am et

Default he was good...

but his time has come. probably should have retired years ago IMO. i'm sure i'll get 84 "what are you talking about?! he was great!" - yea yea yea. WAS. nowadays it just seemed more tired and same old same old. "BOOM!", the cheesy "Tur-Duck-En" they did on Thanksgiving games with the 8-12 legged whatever the hell it was on the dinner plate. i'm old enough to have listened to him most of his whole career and his routine got old long ago.

Maybe he just got sick of riding that bus all the time. I know he couldn't have gotten tired of eating Outback Steakhouse grub....I love that place!

Good luck JM!

Not too sad about this. I was never a huge fan of his style. His replacement is going to be Chris Collinsworth, who I believe is the best announcer in football in my opinion. I would assume the game will keep Madden's name at least for a couple because the game is bigger than the person. Eventually I would expect them to change the name though. I'm sure Madden would vote to name it Brett Favre Football.

Now that really must be a hugely popular game to make that statement...

+ 1 -- I Love how Chris says what everyone else is Afraid to so as not hurt their "good ole' boy" phony or real, friendships with guys still playing or just retired, & who are too close to the game to Really say what is on their mind. Aside from Chris & Michael Strahan, who else is Honest about what they see/hear/feel? Not too many, especially if they're the usual ex-players that ESPN loves to hire. Emmett Smith?! Deion Sanders?! As Bill Walton says, they are "Hooooorible!!".

I would add Warren Sapp to the list of people who speak their mind, although I can't stand him. Sadly ESPN chose not to re-sign Emmitt Smith after his contract ended and he won't be back. Now we won't get to listen to Emmitt mess up names (my favorite was when he referred to Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel as Matt Casselbeck) or make up words. He was seriously clueless. ESPN has reportedly signed a deal with NFL Networks Adam Schefter though and he will join ESPN in August when his NFLN deal is done.

I know this will sound harsh, but THANK GOODNESS! It's about time. One of my least favorite announcers in all of sports (Dick Vitale is up there too). That being said, I thank you Mr. Madden for your dedication to the sport of football and hope you have a good time in retirement.

So, if there is no link you don't believe it? Just Google it if you need proof. Google, the answers to all of life's mysteries...LOL. Just to be clear this is not a promo, just a bad joke.
