The number of comments from "New Members" on the news story here is a pretty positive sign too...... Lots of interest for these titles obviously.....

Good for Blu..... more Blu-ray converts = bigger market = more titles.

indeed, this is a huge plus for the format. bringing out bigger titles like this proves blu is becoming more and more mainstream

Don't freak out fans of the movies but I just watched the first one a few months ago and was wondering what is the big difference between the "EE" versions and the other ones?

The "EE" versions are longer...... which for me..... equals "Worse"

But I'm told (I'm sure many others will have a detailed explanation) that the Extended versions cover more details from the books, and explain more of the story... which is great for fans of the movies.

The EEs are all about 30-40 minutes longer each than the theatrical cuts. Supposedly they look a little better too.

I agree with this, I was a big fan of the books long ago and read them probably 4 times or so, and it's true that the EE's flesh out more of the things covered in the books. I can see where some might think the EEs are just too long, with overly long intro, and the third one just takes forever to end. But yeah, this is the reason I'd like to get the EEs. I doubt I can wait, but I might try.

And actually I agree with those who think the EEs will probably retail for about $60 each with the box set going for about $150, not worth it if you ask me.

The extended cuts also offer a lot more character background info/development; it is revealed what became of Frodo's parents (why he lives with his uncle) as well as Aragorn's mother/lineage. Boromor and Faramir, as well as their father Denethor, are given a lot more history/details and we better understand their characters/motives as a result. Even Treebeard is given more background and as a result we feel more sympathy for him and his mission.

Don't read the books then, even the EE's move like a greased gollum in sight of the ring compared to the books. Personally I really like the Shire bit, and will never watch the theatricals again, they seem so disjointed and curtailed once you're used to the EEs.

I'd put down 150 for a full featured box set including the extended editions with seamless branching (or theatrical cut on an additional disc).

But I don't think I'll touch this release unless it comes to pass that the extended edition comes out and theatrical cut is not included at all. Then, and only then, I will consider picking this release up if I can get it cheap.

i've never seen the EE (as mentioned before)
but i was going to double dip when they came out
but i've been rethinking that lately
i dont think i would like them
i mean the theatricals are great to me, i think im going to stick to them
and maybe give the EE a rent one day just to check them out

The EE's are good, but it's not like the TE's only skim the surface of the story. They are just a bit more thorough in things. Actually, many times of watching the EE's (I've seen these hundreds of times), I felt that some scenes just made a certain portion of the film drag. A good example is Frodo and Sam in the beginning before they enter the Dead Marshes.

The TE's are fantastic films and still nice and long. It's not like you are missing key plot points. Sure, we get to see the death of Saruman, and Frodo catching some Shire salt and the Mouth of Sauron, but these are all extensions of an already fantastic story.
