Thanks for posting this. I've been checking for weeks now. Just ordered it myself. Haven't seen the film for over 25 years--the dark days of blurry VHS and terrible subtitles.

The fact that Panorama put out that upscale in the midst of all of the 2K remasters coming out is absurd. And the caps-a-holic comparison really shows just how abysmal the previous "restoration" was. Though on the bright side, it makes me look forward to more 2K restorations from the 80s... (*sits impatiently for both cuts of Righting Wrongs to be restored*)

As far as they're concerned they got 1080 masters. I don't know if they have to pay to receive a new one or they just used an older one and didn't bother/weren't aware.

What I do find absurd is the seemingly passive response by releasing more of the same, because it doesn't reflect well on them (most won't want to put out/be associated with a sub-par product). Aside from their customers possibly complaining, doesn't anyone responsible for the mastering (or elsewhere in the company) think, "Hmm, these look a bit shite. Maybe I should give them a heads-up so they can take action." That said, we've seen a lack of QC for sometime, so it doesn't surprise me.

It's unfortunate for audiences in Hong Kong and those who are region-locked, but it's thanks to the likes of Eureka and 88 who buck the 'auto-pilot' trend of distributors.

Would you happen to know if the Tiger Cage films have gotten a restoration?

I like HK cinema, but I really don't like HK comedies. Would I like this?

Depends on your taste but I think so. I think the comedy works well for the most part, especially now that there are properly translated subs. I can show this film to friends and always get a positive reaction.

I think this is MORE approachable than the average HK comedy. By that I mean there is still the typical HK comedy stuff there, which you probably won't like, but there's plenty of stuff (physical comedy and general cleverness above the typical HK stuff) left over to enjoy. The horror elements really add to it as well and make it feel unique.

I'm not a big fan of comedies in general, but the mix of comedy and horror in this film is very entertaining. Think Ghostbusters or a less scary Fright Night.

I can't wait! Since you seem to have so much knowledge of the Hong Kong film industry, are you able to speak on the way that the Golden Harvest (or any other HK titles) have been archiving the original film negatives and what type of condition they are in before being restored? I've heard rumors of the original negatives for major titles (e.g. Hardboiled and Ashes of Time) being poorly preserved.

Most people forget that there was a third movie. Understandable since its not a patch on the first two. None of them are related story-wise so a set with only Parts 1 and 2 would be viable (and IMO desirable).

That's probably about right looking at my spread sheet for the upcoming releases there are still quite a few films currently being restored and believe me there's alot coming in 2021.

Eventually we will get to the Tiger Cage films
and hopefully alot more.

I have a few surprises I'm trying to push
through as well.
