I watched 4K77 at the weekend funnily enough, and was glad I don't have to suffer that scene cut like that anymore

![]() After all, it has been revealed that the Greedo shooting first scene is what George wanted originally. |

The worse part is this, which says Jaba was near by. IS calling him, yet knew he killed Greedo. |

I've been wondering for years, am I alone in my interpretation of the original 1977 version of the scene?
I've always seen it as not only does Han shoot "first" (as in, Greedo was about to shoot, but Han shot him first, Greedo doesn't even get a shot off), but Han actually shoots him under the table! Han is slouched down in the booth, and puts his leg up on the table to block Greedo's view of his gun hand. He's even trying to distract Greedo by picking at the wall with his left hand. I've freeze-framed the scene a million times on VHS (and that non-anamorphic official "bonus" DVD), and it's clear to me that the "ambiguity" in the editing was purposefully done so that, for a split second, the audience doesn't know who got blasted, this charming rogue we've just met or the threatening alien. Then Greedo crashing forward onto the table is the payoff. There's no way Han can shoot him the way it's shown in the re-edit without blasting his own leg off, or Greedo seeing what he's up to. (Or maybe Han has some "magic bullet" that passes through his own leg and doesn't explode until it hits the target? ![]() No, it's clear to me: Han originally shoots him under the table, before Greedo can even get off a shot, a totally badass, character-defining move! Yet, in 20 years of reading online arguments about this scene, I can't remember seeing anyone else point this out. Or is it just so obvious, no one bothers to mention it? I have spoken. |

Lucas always intended for Greedo to shoot first. Just like how he always intended for Greedo to say “Maclunkey.” Technical limitations at the time prevented either of these from happening.

Whenever I say “people can’t help but talk about movies they don’t like” I always think “maybe I’m exaggerating a little” but then... nope. People are constantly bringing them up in discussions that have nothing to do with them 🤪 |
