Akira brought Anime to the mainstream. At the time of its release, Anime was an underground niche market generally relegated to high priced import tapes or low quality convention bootlegs.

Rumble in the Bronx (1996 Cut) reopened the US market for Hong Kong Kung-fu cinema. Like Anime, this genre lost itself to the niche market after Enter The Dragon's popularity wore off. Now a resurgence of Asian cinema has returned and is healthier than before.

Game of Death did what the Three Stooges started. Finishing a project after the lead actor has passed on. Today, its not unheard of to use CGI masks, shadows, and other tricks to replace a fallen actor with a stand-in. In the 1970s, without computers, the producers used a look-alike covered in fake beards, moustaches, and sunglasses to complete this film. Check out the first shot of Lee's trailer...its an obvious cardboard cut out.

Ong Bak is Thailand's proof that Hong Kong is not the only source for over the top action. What made Ong Bak different was that nearly all of the effects were practical live stunts with Tony Jaa using a new form of Thai kickboxing.

Other groundbreaking films include:

Ghost for its still incredible practical special visual effects.

Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow which was one of the first films to have live actors but CGI elements.
