I think so, yes. If they can add audio codecs with a firmware update, it means they have a very flexible platform.

I can only assume they are not finished ironing out the bugs of these codecs, so they possibly decided to release it now without them, and give the update later. I'm ok with this, I want it now, as long as it's not buggy They kept updating the rp82 firmware with small tweaks when it was already practically perfect and also end of life, so I trust them. I liked the way it was done : You download a file and burn and it on a CD. Put the CD in the player and it updates itself. It's perfect. No cables, no specific OS requirements, you can burn the iso file in linux if you want.

In the early DVD players there were some disc compatibility problems, and I do expect some for the first generation of bluray/hddvd. So an easy firmware update is a must for early adopters.

That said, I hate the new norm of actually having to update a firmware on consumer electronics. It give a bad precedent of releasing buggy hardware like the toshiba and samsung, and say oh just wait for the new firmware. It feels like we are buying some crappy PC software that we have to keep checking for updates and patches.

I can agree with you on what you're saying. Keep in mind that updates improve things.

updates do, but i think his point is that by having the ability to update, you can release something buggy and work on improving it rather than releasing something that is right the first time.

The last page of this thread has been rather hope inspiring...

Having just gotten rid of my HD-DVD player yesterday, I'm feeling rather giddy and relieved right now...but I'm also feeling fairly burned and jaded.

One more question, in general:

Are ANY of these BD players using the same BS poor man's HTPC concept that HD-DVD is using, or can I get a REAL piece of home theater/consumer electronics from them?

No HTPCs over here...Whoo hoo! There is one HTPC, but it is a true HTPC from AMEX (complete with 1.5TB hard drive and Blu-ray burner/player for $2000). I don't know when it will arrive.

I think that Sony's player is the best looking out of every player that will be coming out. It'll be some time before I have a blu-ray player as prices will be very high and last I checked, even Sammy's player had gone down 640.00 from 1,000, but in the meantime, I can watch blu-ray movies on the ps3.

I'm sure I dont' need to name names, but I see an obvious FUD thread about this player at a certain forum right now...FUD based on...almost nothing.

You'll know it when you see it.

That's true. The Sony ES products, like my DA4ES A/VR and XA9000ES come with 5-year warranties, and they have saved my a** more than once.

Sony ones have such a long warranty on ES products simply because they are mostly digital so not that hard to fix and good chance that the parts will still be around. For most analog things its much more expensive to fix and the parts can be harder to find.

It is going to be released very soon. I heard it is in production already and soon will be put in the stores and online.

Anyway the Panasonic PC drive is very promising to me and it is available.

I read last week that it's shipping to stores in two weeks which should put the availability right around October 1. Right before my birthday... guess what I want?
