Paramount A Place in the Sun (1951) (Paramount Presents #22)

https://www.amazon.com/Paramount-Pre...es-tv&sr=1-449

Quote:
Widely considered one of the finest works of America cinema, Paramount Presents is proud to bring Producer/Director George Steven’s masterwork to Blu-ray—remastered from a 4K film transfer in celebration of its 70th Anniversary. Montgomery Clift stars as George Eastman, determined to win a place in respectable society and the heart of a beautiful socialite (Elizabeth Taylor). Shelley Winters is the factory girl whose dark secret threatens Eastman’s professional and romantic prospects. This second Paramount Pictures adaptation of Theodore Dreiser’s AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY, which was itself based on a notorious true crime tale, was the first film to win the Golden Globe in the category of Best Picture—Drama, before winning six Academy Awards, including Best Director.

[Show spoiler]According to Andrea Calas, Senior Vice President of Archives at Paramount.

Quote:
In the meantime, Kalas also revealed that George Stevens’ A Place in the Sun (1951) has recently been restored and is expected to be released on Blu-ray at some point in the not-too-distant future.

One of those movies that, even though I don't actually love, I'll make sure to upgrade. A classic is a classic.

Can't wait for Ordinary People tho. Hopefully, it's coming.

Great news! I'm going to stick with my preorder of the Imprint release (need to get any Elizabeth Taylor movie in my hands as quickly as possible!), and will pick up Paramount's release when it becomes available as well.

Superb news. First Roman Holiday and now A Place in the Sun, 2020 has been a great year for home video IMO. I will hold off on the Imprint release now.

The transfer suffers from the same strange decisions as the recent restoration of "To Catch a Thief". One generally wonders what the source of the 4K scan was, especially the night scenes are so flat and simply free of dynamics that one hardly thinks of the IP or even more of the OCN. Probably we are dealing with a patchy fine grain element at least 1-2 generations away from the OCN.

And then again, as with TCAT, a completely incomprehensible use of DNR, most scenes dissolve the film grain at least what I guess is true to the source of the transfer, but occasionally we are also in a waxy hell, because some automatic (?) wants to smooth long cuts, beauty shots or generally not exactly focused scenes.

Don't get me wrong, the film has never looked better, but e.g. Warner Archive shows every month that you can do much better. And in many questionable details you can see parallels to previous restorations from the same company. Somehow I'm starting to worry about what they have done to "Roman Holiday".

I hope this is the next Paramount Presents announcement. Just re-watched it on Prime, which looked like a solid master. Would be a day 1 pickup.

Both that and this movie are Via Vision Imprint releases. With this announcement there's a good chance Dead Again could see a statewide release as well.

I pre-ordered the Aussie release. It may get released here in the States eventually, but who knows if it'll have the two DVD-era commentary tracks, or it'll be featureless, like most of these belated, budget-line Paramount releases.

I hope this eventual US release includes the original mono mix. The Imprint/Via Vision only includes that garbage "5.1" remix from the DVD and a 2.0 down-mix. The 4K master is generally fine though the first 30 minutes seem to be from a dupier source and the "management" reminds me a bit of Fox's B&W Kazan films.

I would think it's unlikely that Paramount would put such a big title out on a budget line release. I'm sure if it gets a release at all from them, it would be a Paramount Presents, or at least an anniversary edition.

Speaking of that Kazan set, how do Man on a Tightrope and Pinky look? Those are the two that aren't available elsewhere. And does A Tree Grows in Brooklyn look any better than Eureka's release which has DNR and contrast issues?

I haven't given either a spin yet but I'll report back in the Kazan set thread. I did look at "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" and it's the exact same master that Eureka used.
