Yeah, the brightness is a bit much in many scenes. Not sure what Peter Jackson was going for with it but besides a few wonky cgi shots it's a really nice looking 4k disc. The V-Rex fight is spectacular.

Unfortunately, I don’t think this was even Peter Jackson approved, otherwise they would’ve stated it in the case somewhere. This was just the studio rushing it to coincide with the release of Kong: Skull Island back in 2017.

Yep the high contrast and brightness makes the cgi looks more artficial... Hoping we could get jackson approved master someday

I still think this looks real good. Yeah it's a bit bright and there's a push towards brown but it really looks fantastic in terms of detail and clarity.

One thing i noticed that on lg c8 dynamic tonemapping does wonders with this... It actually brought back some normally clipped clouds and detail. overall lowered brightness in some very bright scenes making it more realistic looking.

Also i like the old bluray and dvd color grade more and lowering warm 2 to warm 1 lessend alot of the heavy yellow antique tint

Yeah, when I revisit this I might use the Panasonic Optimiser to reduce it down to 500 nits.

On my end, I found this disc unwatchable when I was using three different Arve curves for UHD viewing (I would just pick a curve depending on the disc and often the studio). I had to make an individual curve for this movie alone. However, when I moved to the 820 and reduced the Optimizer, the disc looked good. By 'good' I mean, nothing really unusual other than it being bright. However, it looked insanely on fire before the 820 as if the image was in flames.

Outside of that, the filtering/DNR at times I find really distracting on this disc. Some scenes can look quite good, but it's so inconsistent.

Scanned the forum and was looking for your initial long-form review to see what you thought of the transfer. Speaking purely for myself as a longtime fan of this film that saw it three times at the theater (who is NOT going to make the silly claim that he remembers what it looked like at the time)... I kinda think the picture is a bit ugly. It's not just the overblown brightness, the detail in many shots looks weirdly processed. Is this from being digitally manipulated in a menagerie of ways or some encoding issue?

I think it's a bit of everything: an early DI that's been processed up the @rsehole (like all the digital smoothing to erase the seams on Naomi Watts' wig, now I can't unsee it), more tinkering done for the UHD pass (where some scenes look grainier than they do on Blu but others are more DNR'ed) and a bit of poor compression thrown in too. It's a mess.

I suggested this for the DNR list (Light) but it’s yet to be added.

One of my favorite movies. I'm glad that its long and I think the cgi has aged well. Kong looks great even today. My only complaint is that some of the action scenes get too ridiculous. The bronto stampede could have been shorter and they should have cut the part when they get caught on the vines during the T-Rex fight. I recommend watching the extras. The documentaries and deleted scenes are very good.

I wish they would release the 1976 remake on 4K Blu-Ray. They should include the 3 hour tv version too. I want to see that in good quality.

Some of the compositing hasn't aged well... I remember one shot in particular, a wide shot of the insect pit as everyone is climbing out (with Driscoll on the other side), you can actually see parts of the green screen around the actors, with arms and such disappearing, and the compositing is so rough that both the plates shake independent of one another. Didn't notice that until the 4K. Yeesh.
