Well, I finally bought this a couple of weeks ago, and finished watching it tonight. In short, it was quite a thrill-ride, though I didn't care for the language in some episodes (Star Trek having minimal amounts of it up to this point). It was good to see so many great characters return, and I enjoyed the new ones too. I don't think I'll be subscribing to CBS All Access any time soon, but I'll gladly buy Season 2 when it hits Blu-Ray.

Me too. I'll await Season 2 but am in no hurry to purchase CBS All Access.

I delayed watching my copy of Picard season 1 because some fans had been vocal about not liking it. Turned out they were vocal but wrong!

Picard was a very good show, essentially a super-extended TNG episode - resembling the more cinematic ones like The Inner Light or Best of Both Worlds.

Of course I have a few nit-pics, but they don’t lower my overall pleasure:
No real spoilers here: 1) The “look at me, I’m hairy and smoking a cigar like Wolverine” intro of the pilot. 2) The size of the town in the last act (far too small to have the dramatic weight that was needed). 3) A very weird editing mistake in what was probably episode 4 or 5, where Picard is on the planet surface and then he is also on the ship saying bye to his friend who is about to go to the planet surface.

At the expense of alienating (get it?) fellow Trek fans, I think it's worth bearing in mind that Trek fans (to the extent one can generalize) are like fans of most any major franchise: very hesitant to change. As an example, TNG endured criticism for years that it was not TOS/too unlike TOS, yet now is prized as one of the most beloved along with TOS. So the idea that modern Trek (Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks) is not suitably Trek is really nothing new. Annoying, but nothing new. To be clear, no one has to like the new shows; I just find a number of the nitpicks/critiques a bit hilarious. You just wait and see the random criticisms people will find with Strange New Worlds in several months' time.

I agree Picard was well-done. It avoided trying to be TNG season 8, the familiar characters were re-introduced very effectively, and like Discovery it had some solid production values. It is definitely not the conventional crew-on-an-impressive-ship-doing-impressive-things kind of series, played more heavily as a serialized drama, and as such was probably "slower" and less "eventful" than some wanted. I never tired of it myself and excitedly await season two.

Like you, I held off watching this show (partly cos I didn't have an Amazon prime subscription but mostly because of some very vocal "fans" negative reviews of the show).

I have watched season 1 twice already and just finished season 2 and thoroughly enjoyed both seasons.

I like character driven shows and Picard delivers on this in spades.

I think Eugene would have loved the show.
