Default Any thoughts of the PS5 as a dedicated 4K bluray player?

I noticed that the PS5 has a 4K player but then I noticed the 'non disc' version and realized it's almost the same size ad the disc version! That means that the 4K player is probably cramped in a tiny space. Do you guys think the design is inherently compromised as a result? I was seriously thinking of buying a PS5, mainly for it's 4K capabilities, to upgrade from my LG 970 which sounds like a jet engine sometimes. But I feel that due to the size it's going to be a bad player.

Probably should get that Pioneer Elite one...

All the processing power needed to play 4K Blu-rays is already in the rest of the machine, the added size is just for the disc drive. It's also a huge machine so there is nothing small about the Blu-ray drive compared to any other player.

We won't know how good the Blu-ray capabilities are until it's released but assuming it's bad because of the size of the disc drive is ridiculous.

The only way we'll know is when people get their hands on it and put it through its paces.

I don't mind the design, but I'd much prefer it if SONY put out an AV rack version as well.

I wish that it had an actual disc tray where you placed the disc as opposed to having the disc vacuumed in; I have never liked having my discs Hoovered into a player.

Probably should get that Pioneer Elite one...

The PS5 will only play the basic HDR10, not HDR10+ or Dolby Vision, so in order to get the most out of discs encoded in these formats, you will need to spring for a standalone player. By the way, that Pioneer Elite one is the one I'm after. I've been waiting way too long to get one as Pioneer is having problems because of the ongoing crisis. They are also in the process of moving their U.S. distribution to 11 Trading Company, which is owned by Klipsch the audio brand. You can check out the thread for it where I have numerous posts.

No Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos. Hard pass (as a 4K player).

Players don't "have" Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. These are actually metadata that goes on top of Dolby Digital Plus/Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio/DTS-HD Master Audio respectively. This metadata is understood by your sound device, not player. As long as the player can bitstream Dolby Digital Plus/Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio/DTS-HD Master Audio, it has no choice but to send the Dolby Atmos or DTS:X metadata along with it, so you will get these formats even with a 2009 Blu-ray player.

I think what the ps5 can do with regards to DV or Atmos will likely be something that gets enhanced with FW updates.

Used the PS5 player with my 65" Sony x900f and..........Meh. This is my first 4k player and i was not impressed at all. It pretty much looks like my 4k Itunes movies. Granted many Sony tv's seem to be dim when playing HDR movies especially Dolby Vision. I know the Ps5 doesnt have Dolby Vision but I really was prepared for a brighter pic.

I went into ps5 settings and changed audio to dts and tried the com and dolby and still does same.thing anyone.else.have any issues?

You have to use the remote and change it to bitstream from pcm while the movie is running, try that.. sparechange had same problem and got atmos that way.

Yes I would have thought if the player supports bitstream, it'd do Atmos.
