Once again, a record breaking day in Alberta.
Our province has the most active cases in Canada. And I can't go into detail for fear of getting banned, but our government just pissed away another 100 Billion - money that while everyone else seemingly gets to partake in - I don't get any benefit - yet I'll be paying for it for decades to come. |

The word "rushed" implies short-cuts were taken and vital checks and balances were skipped. Nothing could be further from the truth. The process has been compressed in a timeline manner (eg Phase 3 trials started during the Phase 2 trials when enough data was available to prove safety, instead of waiting years between Phase 2 and Phase 3). Everyone is acutely aware of the need to do everything properly. Nothing that increases risk will be done. |

The Rep. of Ireland has made an advance purchase agreement of 875,000 vaccines from Moderna today. Irish media reports say that the vaccines will be delivered in the early new year once Moderna get approval from the European Medicines Authority on any date from Jan 12th.
Ireland is also signed up to receive 4 other vaccines including Pfizer. The EMA will hold a EGM on approving the Pfizer vaccine on December 29th. Last edited by dublinbluray108; 12-01-2020 at 05:35 PM. |

Are we going to have a choice of which company's vaccine we get? Does it matter? I'd like the one with the highest efficacy rate (Moderna) but if they're all using the same tech (messenger RNA) then I guess it won't matter. Just don't give me AstraZeneca's.

Personally I'm mortified vaccines are getting uber fast tracked like this. However it appears (other than maybe AstraZeneca's) they're all being thoroughly validated. Hopefully whatever ill effects there will be from getting them out faster than maybe they should be will be off-set by the benefits of saving thousands of lives and returning life to some semblance of normal.

Pfizer, who looks to be first out the gates with their vaccine, wasn't part of Operation Warp Speed as far as their development and research of the vaccine went. They are only part of it to the extent that the US Gov't essentially "pre-ordered" 100 million doses of it if it was shown to be effective.

Penton Man, have you or yours heard of any possible link with the COVID vaccine and potential cancer risk? Heard this several times from several people all claiming that someone in their family works in hospitals and has come across this rumour. It’s a pretty dangerous rumour and hopefully nonsense!

I have not, nor has my wife heard of such a link, she keeping a pretty close eye on the arsenal for fighting COVID-19, for example, as follows in my next post, once I find the article she told me about a few days ago -

A Randomized Trial of Convalescent Plasma in Covid-19 Severe Pneumonia https://www.nejm.org/action/cookieAbsent concluded – In our trial, the use of convalescent plasma therapy in addition to standard treatment in patients with severe pneumonia due to Covid-19 did not reduce mortality or improve other clinical outcomes at day 30 as compared with placebo. We believe the use of convalescent plasma as a standard of care in such patients should be reevaluated. Further studies regarding antibody therapy may be best focused on other populations or on interventions with other types of preparations, such as intravenous immunoglobulin or anti–SARS-CoV-2 monoclonal antibodies. |

Steed, as a follow-up to the last page, a question (as nobody really knows the answer at this point) that is being pondered by some clinicians and medical theorists is how well will a particular COVID-19 vaccine work in people who are needing to be and already are purposefully immunosuppressed such as transplant patients, some patients undergoing therapy for their cancer, rheumatological diseases, etc. as such therapies may impede their immune systems’ ability to optimally develop protective immune response to COVID-19 upon vaccine administration.
And thusly how/when to time them for receiving the vaccine in relation to their concurrent therapies for other illnesses. |
