Well, I played with the settings and found nothing that improved the macroblocking. The software is also up to date.

I shot a quick video to show what it looks like:

Maybe I should look into buying a new player, this one doesn't have DV anyway.

Would this also apply to the Sony UBP-X8002?

So, I just acquired this player for a song over the weekend and it's my first UHD player. I have a question I thought one of you good people might be able to answer.

I don't have a high-end 4k tv. I got the player in anticipation of getting a better set in the next year or so, so I didn't mind jumping on the deal for the player first. I currently have a TCL 55" S405. It doesn't have wide color gamut and the nits are not ideal for HDR from my understanding. I've read some folks who adjust the settings to make HDR passable, but my question is: will regular old blu-ray look better on a set like this than a UHD? Blu-rays look pretty stellar already, and though I'm tempted to jump on a few titles, I don't want to spend the money yet if I'm not really gonna get the benefits.

Thoughts? And thanks!

If yout TV set is capableof displaying HDR, UHD BDs will certainly look better. If it doesn't, UHD BDs will be displayed as 4K SDR that ismore than BD has to offer.
My advice is,get some titles,or rent them, and see if you like what you see.

I've got one of the original X800's that I got back in 2017. Been a very stable player for me (except for the stuttering issue which was fixed by disconnecting it from the internet) but I'm getting some sounds on it that make me suspcious it's on it's way out. Just posting them here to make sure that I'm not crazy and that what I think is going on is going on.

I'm suddenly getting a disc "whirring" sound on 4K discs. It's not usually able to be heard over the sound of the movie, but on startup it's REAL noticeable since no sound (duh). Sounds like a heavy whirring sound that is very steady. It starts out hot and heavy, but then slowly quiets down as it gets to about 15-25 minutes into the movie, then slowly stops at that point. Then picks up again at the end of the movie. My guess is the sound going up and down is because the disc is spinning faster at the center of the disc, and as the laser moves out to the outer rim of the disc it spins slower and thus the whirring goes away (and of course picks up after it jumps to the second layer and slowly starts to return to the center of the disc). Am I right in thinking that the drive is in the beginning stages of failing? It's silent for blu-rays and DVDs, but only does this with 4K discs (at least for right now). Just wanted to make sure that my suspicions of a soon to fail drive are correct, or I'm missing something

The sounds you are describing sound entirely normal to me when playing back UHD discs. The reason you are not hearing it on other discs is because the data transfer rates far lower.

With my Panasonic UB820 DVD and standard Blu-ray playback is almost silent, UHD is quiet when playing the outer-most layer of the disc on BD-66s and BD-100s, a bit louder playing the inner layer of a BD-66 and the middle layer of a BD-100 and then noticeably louder playing the innermost layer on a BD-100 where the disc RPM is at it's highest.

I would normally agree with you, and I agree 4K discs sound louder, but this sound is 3x louder than it used to be (and I'm very used to the sounds it makes as I've played anywhere from 1-3 discs a day on it for 3 years straight). I can here it whirring away from 14 feet away and that level of sound started about 3-4 days ago

Is the player getting very hot? I had severe heat problems with a X500 earlier this year that I ended up getting a refund on.

Thanks, much, Eddie. I'm gonna pick up Revenge Of The Sith, Jaws, and It's a Wonderful Life to try it out. Sith might not be the best Star Wars, though I totally love it, but it's been there for every new set-up I've gotten as a demo disc and the others I know just as intimately, so we'll go from there...

I'm afraid Revenge Of The Sith is not the best UHD BD to test howthis format looks in your TV set. It was shot digitally at 1920x1080p, that is Full HD, at 10 bits. The UHD BD is an upscale and not a regular one that come from 2K DI's that have more resolution, and shot with what are now considered ancient cameras and technology. The UHD BD doesn't look bad but it shows its not getting the most out of the format.
There are 2K DI's that look spectacular on UHD BD like the latest Terminator movie, or Star Trek Into Darknes, or Alien Covenant or Prometheus that can be bought cheap now, and these may show you how UHD BD's look on your set up, despite being upscales, much much better than Revenge Of The Sith.

Thanks for the insight. I like Prometheus and get that that might be a good gauge, so maybe I'll pick that up, too. I'm honestly still pretty enamored with how blu-rays look on my set-up so I'm just dipping my foot in. The Middle Earth movies are some of my absolute favorites ( of the types of things that are going t actually make it to UHD) but I don't necessarily want to drop the cost of a player to check out the format!

I’ve been trying to contact Sony re the playback of blurays. I have a Sony XBRX900F television connected to a Sony X800M2. When I play blu rays they look like garbage. Its like faces are shifting on the screen...not good at all. Has anyone else had this experience. Sony’s support is HORRIBLE for the price they charge to purchase their gear. Any help with settings would be very appreciated.

That sounds like either a bad settings or faulty player. I never experienced that.

Turn off the forced noise reduction. See post below.

Eh, don't listen to evh. Sith rocks on UHD, not exactly "demo material" for the format (does everything have to be?) but it's a decent little upgrade nonetheless.

Hey everyone!

I was curious if anyone had this issue before. So about a week ago when I turned on my player, I wasn't getting any picture. Usually when I turn it on it goes to the menu screen. At this point, I wasn't able to turn it off from the player or remote. I'm able to open the disc tray from the player (not the remote) but nothing else. The remote is pretty useless at this point.

The next day I disconnected everything and plugged the player back into the outlet and it was on even though I never turned it off or on. I connected the HDMI output again, but with no menu. Instead I get a black screen with the Sony logo in the middle. I would say every 45 seconds the logo would disappear and the screen would go black, the green light would turn off, and the logo would appear again. It does this continuously.

Has this happened before to anyone? I've had the player for almost 3.5 years and within a week this started to happen. Maybe it's time to replace?
